Window scrolling while composing a message !!
« on: December 24, 2009, 09:26:40 PM »

Hi y'all,

I sent the following PM to Sparky in hopes that he had a solution to the problem.  He thinks that this "scrolling below the window" problem is related to my browser settings, but suggested that I ask for futher help here.   Incidental, my browser is MS Internet Explorer, version 8.

TIA

Warren Wagner

First of all, thanks for all of your efforts that you put in to creating and maintaining "Stunt Hanger".   It's a great place to hang out, post questions, and help others with answers to their questions.

Now the bad news.....your software is driving me nuts.   When I compose a message that is longer that the message window is tall, the typing scrolls off the bottom of the window and is out of sight.  As a character is entered, it pops back up for a fraction of a second, and then disappears again below the bottom of the window so one can not see what they are typing.

I do not recall this happening in the past.

My questions are relatively short and stay within the window frame, but my answers, in order to be complete, often exceed the height of the window.

You may already be aware of this problem.

I'm keeping an eye out for your building classes.   Do you plan to continue with them.   I always read every word you write on building, as you have to be one of the premier builders and finishers in this hobby.....and right at the top as far as speed is concerned.

Thanks and Happy Holidays.

Warren, when did you upgrade to 8.0 IE? I recently installed/upgraded to it, and experienced many weird quirks, with no remedy except to roll back to 7.0 IE. Rest assure, there is nothing wrong with the software on this site. That is my experience with IE 8. It no worky. I have no idea why they released it like it is. Others have experienced similar problems, and you can play with every setting til' the cows come home-none of the settings fix anything.

Good luck

Richard,

Good point !   As I mentioned in my post, this scrolling problem did not exist in the past, and yes, I did upgrade (somewhat reluctantly) to IE8 some time ago.   MS keeps pestering you to upgrade, with promises of improved performance and security, and eventually I give up.   Guess that's a mistake.

Brett,

I did try Firefox in the past, but there we some things that were different enough that I went back to IE, and removed Firefox to keep my computer "clean".

I always swear that I'll buy a Mac the next time, but I always end up sticking with a PC, probably mostly because of the price is some 7-8 times more than the cost of a new PA 65 !!!  :-)

Cheers.

Warren - From the TOOLS drop down menu, put your browser in Compatibility View Mode and leave it there...problem solved. Many existing web pages don't conform to the new IE8 standards...

FWIW, I did what EricV. suggested a month or two ago, and still occasionally have the problem, due to low batteries in my cordless keyboard. You'd think there'd be a low battery warning, but doesn't seem to happen.  n~

What  Eric said!

If you scroll down the forums first page, presently near the bottom you'll find this, where Randy answered my question:

http://stunthanger.com/smf/index.php?topic=15334.0

This worked instantly for me. As with you, my problem had started only recently and not all at once.

IE (any version) and the word "standards" shouldn't be used in the same sentence! Try the Acid3 test in IE8 and tell me how it works out :) Then try it with IE8 in "compatibility mode".

IE8 "compatibility mode" actually makes the browser act in a less-standards-compliant way, to mimic the atrociously odd-ball way that IE6 worked. Changing the user agent to something else rather than IE, and leaving compatibility mode "off' will probably also work, because that tricks the server into thinking it's a better browser.

Safari and Opera are about the only current released browsers that can pass all the Acid tests (100%). IE8 gets 20%.

I'll wait for IE9. Seems V8 has lots of new bells and whistles, which can be a source of trouble for MS(happens every time they"upgrade"). I need a simple, stable environment for my work, not things popping up everytime I move my cursor and accidentally "hover" over a "keyword" or whatnot...Last I checked, our software for this site is up to date. Til the next MS upgrade, I will continue to use the "dumbed up" IE v7. ~>

Merry Christmas Everyone!  H^^

You damned if you do, you damned if you don't. When IE did not follow standards(ie6), everyone complained. When IE followed some standards but not strictly(IE7), everyone complained. When IE follows them strictly(IE8), then come up with another test to beat it and start complaing again. For the record, when IE8 came out, Acid2 was the standard everyone followed.

Due to nature of my job, I spend a lot of time in IE,Firefox,Safari and Opera. EVERY browser has issues! Let me correct myself: EVERY website application has issues with one browser or another.

Well, one solution would be to actually go along with the standards to begin with, instead of just doing whatever the hell they want. And I am not even sure IE8 passes Acid2. Another alternative would be to actually fix and release *a browser that passes*. Safari 4.0 didn't pass, they updated it, now it passes. 20% is laughable - Safari 3 got 84% the day the test was announced.

IE (any version) is a pox on humanity, and there is absolutely no reason to use it when superior products can be had for *free*.

I had the same problem with Seamonkey on linux. Turned out, after a lot of messing around, that the problem wasn't with Seamonkey or the web site. It was a quirky battery in my cordless (IR) mouse. Changed the battery and the problem went away.

Eric,

Well, I made the change to Compatibility View, and it *appears* to have corrected the problem.

I can type as much as I want, and it stays inside the viewing window.   How sweet it is.

You 'da man !!

Thanks,

Brett,

I've bookmarked Firefox and Opera, and will consider using them if I experience more problems with IE8 (which I probably will !!).

Cheers.

This reminds of the new upgrades the phone company would come up with.  Fix it in the field not in the lab.  I am surprised phones even worked.  The wife has the latest Windows loaded that finally got some of my stuff working, but is so much fun to be typing and look up at a blank screen.
