Title: Wind Speed Indicator
Post by: Brian Massey on April 22, 2011, 10:39:44 AM
Any suggestions on some sort of a hand held somewhat accurate not too expensive wind speed indicator? I've looked at several of the hobby sites and haven't seen one. I'd like to have one just to satisfy my curiosity  . . . IE, when I chicken out.

This is the one I have. It's accurate enough (accurate enough to tell you that almost everybody overestimates the wind speed) and small, no batteries to maintain.

I've had one of these for years. They can often be found wherever they sell farm supplies, specifically where they sell herbicides and so forth that are to be sprayed. (For a lot of those chemicals you have to be have a pesticide/herbicide application certificate that says you've been to school and understand how to do it.)

There's also the Kestrel line of hand held weather meters.  http://www.kestrelmeters.com/home.jsp  No doubt, more expensive than the one already suggested although the 1000 series is not tremendously expensive.  The site is interesting, just to see the range of meters they produce.  They go from 'mild' to 'wild' with the prices changing to match.  I have one of the higher end ones, given to me over a year ago as a 'semi-retirement' gift by my employer but since I didn't do much flying in that time period, I haven't put it through its paces very much.  I hope to change that this year.  I have used it enough to agree with Brett that we tend to over-estimate wind speeds and also that it seems to go through the little AAA cells rather quickly.

Hey Brian, I was thinking about getting one also, Not that it would do me any good. But I saw one in a Kite catolog I ordered.
GOOGLE;;  IN TO THE WIND.COM ,,,They have a nice little handheld one for $36.50 ...It measures some other stuff too...
The catolog is FREE.... Plus alot of neet kites...
   Hope this helps,
Doug M.

Some time back there was a construction project for a wind speed meter in one of the model mags, Used a ping pong ball suspended on a wire and a protractor scaled in wind speed mph. Total cost, almost nothing.

If you have a iPhone there is an app for that. I got it and it was like 1.99.

Just checked the price it is .99

I checked it with our wind meter at the field. It was real close.

At our RC field there is a wind sock.  If it is straight out you don't fly control line.   LL~ LL~

Top Flight - Precision Magnetic Prop Balancer can be used as an wind speed indicator.  See page 7 of the manual. http://manuals.hobbico.com/top/topq5700-manual.pdf

If the wind sock is straight out you should think twice about low speed maneuvers in the big birds too.  (Note: wind sock in corner of photo)

I got this some time ago...Several members of our club made one and they work well and are quite accurate.

Norm, that is just way too cool.  Think I will make up some of those and put them in the pits at the Memphis Stunt Classic.
