Will I be legal ? ? ? (BOM Question)

 Gentleman;

   I have gone over the BOM Rule in the 2008 Book a dozen times and interpret it to say that I must be the builder of the model in question up to and including the covering if any as if it were from a kit.. Here are my questions?

   If I build to this stage and all the way past Base Coating and ready for trim, if the trim is done by someone else is the model legal under the current reading of the BOM Rule? I understand all contests do not enforce this rule. Also if you had your model there how would you feel about the competition involved? I would not hesitate to tell the CD that the last of the finish was done by someone else.

  I have a wonderful chance to have my "Biplane" finished by a professional "Airbrush" Artist. I want to compete here on the East Coast with it this year. If having this done by someone other than myself denies me appearance points I don't want it done. So without further ado how about a few comments on this for me. Keep in mind when you comment that this could be locked out at any time. This is not a loaded question, it is a legitimate one from me, because I want to know. I will be competeing for the first time ever this year and I do not want to be off to a bad start.

The *finish* is a debatable item in the BOM discussion.   Painting has been done by others, and admitted to, forever it seems.  The individual CD makes the call is my guess.  I would do it and fly anyway.  NO AP is tough, but you can still compete, regardless.   Only at the NATS in Jr., Sr., Open can you be DQ'ed  through the BOM rule.  In local contests, everywhere that I have been, the PAMPA rules are used.  They only require BOM to get AP, not to fly.

Bring it to Akron, Ohio. No problem .We will either go with the much discussed 2005 "Interpretation adjustment"   ::)or more easily, NO BOM.     We plan to have three events this year at our new field. As I know this artist will not be painting the model ,It would be the same as applying a decal to your model and I see nothing wrong with it. You will be doing 99% of the finish right? So where the Beef?

If I could get Shultzy to airbrush a logo on my plane do you think I would jump at the chance? Yes! Then let someone tell me I am DQ'd from the BOM? NOT!!!

  Thank you, I have heard what I needed to hear. Yes Bob 99% of the build will be completed by me. I called the young lady and told her to start the design. She said it would be ready next week. Just one more thing to dream about.

but thinking about some of my airbrushed projects from the past done for other folks...even the thought of taking someones beautifully crafted piece of flying art.... has always SCARES THE POOOOOOOOOOP out of me. 
When I think about it....HOW TRUSTING (or downright GULLABLE) some of my flyin partners have
been when they have given me their beautifully finished models  to have lettering, logos...cartoonies etc..painted onto a wing panel or body.

MOST IMPORTANTLY...IS TO MAKE CERTAIN THE NEW PAINTER KNOWS EXACTLY WHAT PAINT PRODUCTS HAVE BEEN APPLIED to the model before adding any kind of cutzee' stuff.

At least this is the best way to AVOID those incompatibility problemo's that often occur when adding those last top clear coat finishes.

That little logo was nuttin' really.
All I did was to blow up the actual logo from a book...to the right size onto a piece of low tack masking that I ran through a copy machine...

carefully cut out the masking with a sharp #11 scaple blade...
lifted off the masking and positioned it onto Paul's flawless paint job and then
quickly took my Iwata and carefully blew the premixed paint colors that he had provided for me...onto the nose cone.

Final step was to add the little inda ink outlines.
That point foward, I gave it back to Paul to add that final and beautifully done Clear coat.

Knowing just how little time Paul had before traveling to the Championships..I was amazed that Paul trusted me enough to add that logo with such a short time frame schedule.

TRUST THIS! COMPARED TO THAT MAGNIFICENT WORK OF PAUL'S BEAUTIFUL AIR ART B-17...that little logo was nuttin!
IN TRUTH...IT SCARED THE POOP OUT OF ME...WHEN I THINK HOW MUCH DAMAGE I COULD HAVE DONE to such a beautiful paint job that Paul had taken so much time and effort to do.

Plus....this model was on a reeeeeeeeeeally tight time schedule...and although Paul could have easily done the same thing, I had my airbrush already set up and ready to go and when you think about it...
Just how little smidge of a time...it took to blow on that logo...compared to that UNBELIEVABLE BEAUTIFUL B-17 PROJECT that truly was a WINNER IN EVERY SENSE OF THE WORD and should be celebrated as one of the most successful stunt model projects that I have ever seen.
Thus proving...
That PAUL WALKER, AL RABE ARE IN A CLASS OF THEIR OWN!

I think I posted something to this effect on the other site some time ago as to why couldn't I do the same.  I was slammed hard by people saying it is not done.  I still contend that in reality that building does have some effecton the finish, but, to put on a 20 point finish takes a real craftsman.  But, in total what has the building really have to do with appearance points.  Heard an individual today complaining that he only got 19 points for appearance.  It is up to who ever is doing the appearance judging as to who gets what.  If your flying PAMPA Classes don't worry about it as most local meets are doing away with the appearance points.  Will check tomorrow to see what my Spitfire got as I got a lot of good comments.  I also didn't participate in the concours voting as there were just too many gorgeous planes to decide on.  DOC Holliday

Billy, You have not been legal every since you started buying those Wanted Posters from the post office,
