Will Hinton's 'Lonely are the Hunted'
« on: August 02, 2008, 07:10:31 PM »
I picked up a copy of Will Hinton's book 'Lonely are the Hunted' at the
Nats this year. I just finished the book while flying from Manila to Tokyo
this morning, and wow, what a great read.

I thouroughly enjoyed the book. It's a Western in the classic sense with
plenty of horse riding and gunplay. I found myself easily rooting for the
good guys and despising the bad.

At only $10 the book was worth every penny. Will says this is to be a
series of books, and I am looking forward to the next installment.

Thanks for a great read Will, Steve.

Slightly off topic, but fun anyway!!  Louis L'Amour made a lot of money off me, selling me paperback westerns.

Guess I'm not a high culture sorta guy........I'll have to check out Will's work. H^^

Cheers,
Jim

I have 100 of Louie's books. I read them all and then let them sit for a year or 2 and then I go back and read them again. Great way to relax and shut out the world. Be fun to read Will's book.

We have everything we know was written by L'Amour, including his book of verse, Smoke from this Altar. The only hokey ones are the Hopalong Cassidy items he wrote under a pen name.

Two other pretty good Western Writers are Elmer Kelton and Robert J. Randisi. The latter also has a "Rat Pack" trilogy set in the old Sands in Vegas.

Steve,
Thanks so much for the kind words on my book.  It's always rewarding to know it was enjoyed.  Any one interested can visit my new web site at www.authorwillhinton.com and read an excerpt there.  To be compared to Louis L'Amour would be the ultimate compliment.  My favorite read of his is the Last Of The Breed as it is so riveting!  I've read it several times.  The rest of his that fall in my favorite category are the Sackett series.  I also have a tape of that movie, the Sacketts that is one of the best ever done as far as following the books accurately.
As to the info on Zane Grey, I'm not sure where the information came from that he never left a New York office, but that's inaccurate - he traveled extensively in the west, lived there off and on for many years, and actually ended up living the most of his life on the west coast as he bought and traveled in a huge sailing yacht.  He still holds many size recoreds for different fish caught from that yacht.
His cabin in the Arizona forrest just burned down a couple of years ago just under the Magollon rim.
Thanks again guys, and may the west live on!
Blessings,
Will

Hey L'Amour fans, talk about a small world!  I just read where Bantam Books has rereleased Louis' self written account of his life, Education Of A Wondering Man, in hardcover to commemorate the 10 anniversary of his death.
I've read this book and it's so very interesting because he was a real adventure type guy!  Sounds like a "must have" edition to me.
Blessings,

If you are a fan of westerns check out "The Lone Rider of Santa Fe" and "Death at Double X Ranch" among others by Holly Martins. He described himself as a "writer of cheap novelettes" but his fame extended beyond the USA even to Europe. He was active in the late 1940s.

Sorry guys, I'm more of a military science fiction guy myself. John Ringo, David Weber, Travis Taylor with an occasional diversion into Raymond Feist.

Hey Randy,
If you like Feist you would love Robert Jordan and Terry Brooks!  They're right out of the same mold and almost addictive.  Jordan died before he finished his series of 13 books but they contracted another noted author to finish the final book using his notes so I'm eager to see how that turns out.
Read on!

Will,

Jordan lost me after book 10. Just seemed he was filling space for much of it. Short attention span, I guess. Fiest kept me interested and, of course, that's never a problem with Ringo. Try On Death Ground sometime. It, ah, goes fast. Or the Posleen series. I will always be a Bun Bun, the switchblade weilding, flop eared rabbit, fan.   ;D

Sigh, I'm on vacation and up in the mountains of Idaho. Time to get back to the beach and read some more.

What about Larry McMurtrey. Lonesome Dove. All those spin offs. Read every one I could find. Even the modern "westerns" like Texasville and the Last Picture Show. At least they're set in Texas.

I will check out Will Hinton.

Will I had been a fan of Louis for many years before I was doing work for the Valley National Bank in Phoenix Ar in the fall of 1975. I was going to be in Prescott for a week and the President of the bank told me to stop in and see Mr L'Amour. The president and Louis were friends and Louis was staying at the same hotel as I would be. He called Louis and told him to look for me. I didn't know he had done that. When I checked in the clerk told me Mr L'Amour wanted me to call him. I had supper two times with him and I have gone back to the southwest many times over the years to see many of the places he told me about. I visited one of them this year in Utah near Moab.  Will I can't wait to read your book.

WOW Ed!!!
I haven't seen this thread for a while because I've been gone.  To actually meet Louis L'Amour!! What an honor.  That's one I know you'll remember forever.  (I'm a little green with envy right now.)  I just sent you a personal "e".

And Randy,
Hey!  It ain't nice to write while on vacation and rub it in ya know.  (Just kiddin')  I'll give those other writers a try, I'm always looking for new fantasy writers to read, but often hesitate because of not knowing what they're like as a writer so end up not going there.  Thanks.

What would life without books be like?  I sure don't wanna know!  Now, who's gonna write that great CLPA novel about the three year old kid who whups up on all the world flying his 1/2 a stunter?

Read on - rock on,
Will

My typical read would be something on science.  However, I have a background in western movies.  I was a movie star!

Dad worked for Republic Studios in L.A., and I got a few parts in some lousy western movies at age 7 or 8. Not a leading role, but there I was!  My sister owned a couple 35m film clips showing little old me, but they got brittle and self-destructed.

I have to get the Will Hinton book.  I've read most of Louis L'Amour.  His only bad book was "The Tall Stranger".  I like the Elmore Leonard westerns, but not his highly acclaimed mysteries.  Donald Hamilton, who wrote "Big Country", made into a movie with Gregory Peck, had three or four good westerns. I also like Wade Everett and Will Cook.  I think they were the same person, but could be mistaken. Cook wrote several good western novels with female heroines.

Congratulations and best of luck with your book Will, reading is one of the things that cuts into my
building (more like repairing) time.  I tend to favor westerns and Civil war era books.  I am finishing one now
written by Cival War era historian Chester Hearn who is a friend of mine and will look for your book to follow.
Likely end up a Will Hinton fan also.
Isn't it great to find out there are people out here you  share more than one interest with, if I find out
some of these C/L flier-western readers are also bluegrass'ers I'll think I've died and gone to heaven !!!!

Dalton,
I pick a little guitar once in a while.  Not a lot of 'grass, but occasionally the guys aroound here get going that direction!
Thanks to all for the positive comments!
Dennis,
The sequel, book #2 in the trilogy, is likely to be out sometime in the first quarter of next year.  (Hint - Dan Kade plays a really small part in it, but I'll likely return to him in the third.  Bear Rollins is my main man in #2, but I think you'll like him just as well.)
