Wild Bill Netzeband Plans
« on: August 22, 2023, 04:22:31 PM »
Years ago, I built a Doodlebug from plans.  It was a Wild Bill design and he actually had several sizes.  I have been searching for those plans again but have had no luck in finding them.  Does anyone have the plans or do you know where I might find them?  So far I have come up empty.

Thank you
Mike

   I think all of the "Bugs" were published in Flying Models Magazine. Plans are available at;

Thank you Dan.  I had not thought of them.  Could not find them anywhere.

Mike, there are articles bout the Doodlebug 330 and 580 models on the    http://airfieldmodels.com/gallery_of_models/index.htm   web site.  I have one of the plans -- I don't remember where I got it, and I don't know which model it is, but I'm sure it can be scaled pretty easily.

I have a laser-cut kit for the Doodlebug 440.  Not sure who made it, might Brodak have entertained the idea?

Jim I think John Lowery is who I was trying to think of and maybe where I got my kit years ago now that i hear that name.  I did have the plans also but they have long disappeared.   Do you have any idea if he is still making the kit or is he still around?  I would like to contact him if he is.

The plan is by Wild Bill himself - it's curled up pretty tightly, but I could see if my printer can scan or copy it.  Span and area aren't specified on the plan, only .25 to .35 engines.  The laser cutting is excellent, many of the parts literally falling out of the balsa sheets.

The Flying Models website indicates the wingspan is 42" and it was published in the March 2002 issue.

  I have a .25 size Doodlebug kit that I think I got from Eric Rule. I think he made a short run of these at some one's request. I was ordering something else from him and he asked if I was interested in that kit at a good price so I jumped on it. My next trip up in the attic I'll have to check it out. I don't think I ever went through the kit. I seem to remember one of our Japanese Stunthanger friends posting pictures of his .25 size "Bug" with a detailed report. You might try your luck at searching the forum for that.

Using the search function here ...

It appears John Lowry initially did the kits, then RSM.  Walt Umland posted in October 2019 here that he had taken over the line of kits.  And, while the plans recommend .25 to .35 engines, several report the 440 flies great with an OS FP or LA .25.
