Why are AMA fees for insurance event and club fees going up?
« on: December 05, 2015, 12:33:13 PM »
At our club meeting the Ama is raising club fees, contest fees and the fee for certificate of insurance.

The good news is the old fee schedule is in place till 12/31

They should soon be giving a price break to clubs in New York State- on Tuesday nite Dec 8th there is a public hearing in Albany County for proposed law no. Q which is intended to ban use or operation of any type RC aircraft, NOT JUST DRONES in Albany and surrounding areas.
Im not making this up- go to this web link to read the entire law.

Doesn't touch controline, freeflight guys.

If it passes into law as written, I'm outta NY State!

Tucson AZ is always a good bet for flying either R/C or CL.  One of the nicest CL fields around anywhere, and 3 past National Stunt Champions, 1 National Scale Champion, and the Current National Carrier Champion!  The home of VSC and we fly all year round!

No. They/we are planning on assuming (or just have assumed) the risk associated with drones. That's going to jack the cost of insurance up astronomically given that there is another "incident" just about every day. And that will go through the roof on December 25th.

Don't forget about the RC Race boats if they are still racing these days there.   H^^

Brett;

Yeah, bet there are going to be alot of them bought that is for sure. I own a couple and have never really flown them much
except at the house in the front yard especially when it snows.
the Families like the arial footage, so I send them some when I can when it desides to snow here in good old Norther VA.

Yep, they're own greed is going to bite them in the a$$ and they're expecting us to pay for it. I've said since the beginning that the AMA should have visibly separated themselves from quad/drone activity etc. and have nothing to do with and no association with them. Sadly, even the AMA President doesn't even begin to "get it". That makes at least two Presidents in this country without a clue.

Hmm, I sure didn't think you were kidding. David and I went back and forth on email with our District 10 AVP on the same topi ca few months ago, with the astonishing result that the AMA apparently considers overflying people at low altitudes to be a "right".

Where I live in northern Indiana, there was a recent add on TV for drones. They emphasized being able to "spy" on your neighbors. Stores in the area are advertising a free drone with any purchase over a certain amount.

What a mess, and like others have already said, we are going to end up paying, either in much higher membership costs due to insurance premiums going up, or losing our flying privileges altogether. Drones are not models, they are toys.

I am not saying to get ride of drones, as I know people here have them, like them, and probably fly them responsibly, but AMA has certainly stepped in it big time and should have avoided taking them into the fold.

Is it possible that the insurance program could institute some type of risk based "surcharge" for those who are flying certain type of models which have higher risks? i.e. Turbine power, Giant scale, drones. The cost for automobile insurance if you drive a high end sports car with high horsepower performance is much more then premium for ordinary passenger vehicle. Those flying only hand launch gliders, rubber power, and paper airplanes should pay least.

That makes perfect sense! Therefore it will never happen. What a mess, and it's only just beginning.
