Whos Silly Idea was THAT !.
« on: December 29, 2015, 10:36:22 PM »
So the OS 35s weigh the same , or less , than the Veco 19s ( Whats the Lightest .35 thread ) . This got me thinking .

Id got 88 mph out of it , in speed . And it already had the larger intakes in it . Two 21/29s oe er something ( two 21 / 40s ,
but theyd gone !  :P) So out came the olde wreck for a bit of refurbishment . Cut down the P-38 tanks and dragged it out to
Cowra meet . The fuel was dodgie & the tanks dodgier , so I canned them ( 44 Gal. can ( 50 US Gal. ! )) .

The other day I got a piece of sandpaper while the thing was on the bench . Next thing you know ( 5 hours later ) Id rasped off all the top
covering to bare wood , and resheeted the resheeted areas Id used thinned balsa cement to shrink & distort . :(

Of to the City on a burning hot day , frazzle frizzle . Id found some tanks with the right side feed bore , but the 9 x 6s Id just put on the Whirlwind
so I couldnt find them !  ??? Ended up with the 10 x 6 top flite nylons , which are a bit bigger , heavier & meatier . And no Filters .

First Go the silly tank starp parted on the inner , out of the wingover . Id brought the others so doubled it .

Next Go , Got the Outer fired up and the inner kept leaning . So was two turns out more , at the launch . ( obviously a bit of grot in the thing )
The Inner went Full rich , and the Outer Full Bore ( sounded like it was right on song ) UNFORTUNATELY on 70 Ft of .018 this was De Ja Vu
of the ' Turn Left , three Rolls , and Go for The Pilot , Inverted trick . Or so it appeared to He , for the Moment .  :-[

I mustve snatched it a bit straight at some stage , but the disadvantage of not walking to the field is your not limbered up & loose , and ready to SPRINT .

Therefore apart from the tailplane , and a nacelle , and the outer wing , and most of the new covering , it was ok. I couldnt give it away >
Someone suriptitiously retuned it to my car boot . >:(

A few days later I slotted the outer back in place , and got the rasp out . Took all the painted covering off the underside back to the wood ,
And got the thing generally nailed back togeter . Thought'it'd had spruce spars, but theyre not .

It dates back to 002 , so im lothe to scrap it unless ive replaced it . Busy on other things so it looks like the No 1 Rat Rod'll be airwothy ? again soon .

But do I strip of the rest or just do it as I go .  LL~

The .35s are actually a few grammes lighter than the Veco .19 B.Bs.

But the VECOs with the Combat intakes on 20% nitro with R 5 RossiPlugs  sound twice as nasty . All Donations of R5 Rossi plugs gratefully accepted .
You might even get loot outof me for em . If / when I get a Lt. Wt replacement built , it'll hve to be for the Vecos . Though a Beaufighter & a Meteor
might predeceed that . n~

Plane looks a little small for .35's to me.   Does look good.   If it wasn't so far I would take it off your hands and refurbish it foe the LA 25's or even the Fox 25's I have.  Got a little work done on the B-25 yesterday.

Was thinking Id try 8x8s on it ( them ) to see If it'd do ' the Ton ' for Speed . Bit of Nitro etc , might come up against a ' drag wall ' or ' compresability '
 LL~ LL~ LL~
You can see a few ' repatches ' Used PVA for the needed strength . PPain is 1/16 Sht. T.E. with sown hinges . Explains the retained 3/8 in places .

The 262's getting a bit of refurbishment too , was overweight. Pictured here its about 24 Oz. now . two 25 GP / OS FP clones , for 70 ft. of .018 .
Original flew on 60 ft. of .015 , or 70 ft. of .012 if it was FLAT CALM , two OS 20s , would do wingovers , loops bunts and Horz Eights on the OUTER ,
as was 38 Oz. , 41 muffled . " Youll Use The MUFFLERS " was paternal instruction , for some reason .  ;D ( Neigbours , actually . )

This and the Whirlwind would be N 30 eligable . If anyones intrested I'd send the plans to Tai.

Mod'ed the nacelles to rebate the tanks , to get 7 minute tanks a bit out of the airstream . Before youd get the Schedule with ONE lap between manouvres , with a few laps only , maybe after . were around 80 cc max., carved the scoop type front in boredom one day , worried itd do something nasty aerodynamically . But it Didnt.

These all first flew in 2001 . The Original Whirlwind & 262 were 1973 / 74 . Fryer built a Mosquito back then with a Oliver & something in it .

closed the back of the tank bay with 1/16 ply , and epoxied a bit of 1/2 sq. spruce up in the front , behind the ply . Shaved a lamination of the
ply to reduce the impregnation , Needs a bit more thinner/ degreaser or whatever .

The Whirlwind I try to look after a bit more , probably as some maggot ( christopher ) put his combat wing thru the original about its third outing .

Just Fitted OS 20 / 25 max to this , instead of the Fox 19 / 25s , as once we used No Nitro , as ya couldnt get it easy then , you can see where the
retaining nuts are redone . Recessed the Tanks on this to , as youre after all the lift you can get , at 55 Oz. :-[ :P

Original was 35 Ounce, unmuffled OS 20s , in Silver witgh RAF insignia . Fuse & Nacelles were ' square cut ' 1/2 sht with only ply doublers on nacelles
No Sht Fairing there . Had bad vibes untill Id crossed the props . On prop Flat , the other vetical , at t.d.c. , to put the vibes out of phase. Worked .

60 Oz is a bit heavy , but they actually fly fine on about 65 ft. of wire . ( 60 fts a bit short at that weight.) C/S sheeting on originalsd was only
two bays on top , woulda been Balsa Cement  used And stingey on the finishing , as it was all paid for by paper runs . Up at 6 am , 70+ papers .

Would want to be down around the 40 Oz mark , for two .15s . Good for ' display combat ' with all those props , if the other Turkeys not a Lunatic .
