Who was the first one to use the ST 60 in Stunt?
« on: March 19, 2012, 06:30:45 PM »

Just trying to know a bit more of the C/L engine history and I am curious about the use of ST 60 in C/L. Who was the first to use one for Stunt and what year this happened?

Did ST ever offer the ST 60 with a venturi?

I don't know about the first use of the engine but Al Rabe won the US NATs with an ST 60 in his Sea Fury back in 1973.

HI Martin,

I don't have a clue as to who was first, but Al was pretty near, at least the first to win a NATS with one.

I am pretty sure Super Tigre made a C/L version for a while.  Venturi and NVA were offered as parts so I figure they did make the C/L version.

There was a local guy (Ron Adams, in Detroit) running ST 51's, then 56's then 60's in the early 1960's.   I do not believe any of those engines were made for CL use.

Actually, Al won the Nats Open event with his Sea Fury/ST 60 in 72.

Al was one of the pioneers in the quest for more power.  His first published Mustang was powered by 40's, including the McCoy and the ST.  By the time he got to his firt Bearcats, he was using the ST 46.  Then he had some custom work on the ST engines to get them stroked/bored to 51's and more.  By the time he did his Sea Fury, he was working with the ST 60 which he stayed with through later iterations of the Mustang.  He engine in the Mustang to the World Championships in 78 (2nd place) was based on the ST 60.

There may have been some serious fliers using the ST 60 before Al n 72, but not much earlier than that.

According to Al's bio at the AMA website, his first Sea Fury was powered by an ST60 in 1971.

Later he did win the Nats Open in 1972 (thanks Keith) and then Walker Cup in 1973 with the Sea Fury II and an ST 60.

What about Windy and his Sweeper in the late 60's?

What about Windy and his Sweeper in the late 60's?

In his editorial section of Flying Models, Aug 81, Bob Hunt recounted his first encounter with the Sweeper design by Windy Urtnowski in May 64.  80 inch span, Super Tigre Blue Head 60, 100 ounces.  Construction article for that first Sweeper appeared in the 1969 American Aircraft Modeler.

Windy's later version appeared in the FM Aug 81 issue with an OS 61 FSR.

My understanding was that Larry Scarinzi,(the stingienst man in stunt-his famous handle) was one of the first guys to bust it out with an ST 60 in competition stunt.

Scarinzi's Blue Angel was one of the earlier big for its time models with his Blue Angel.  (Flying Models, Feb 65)  His article and plans show a Fox 59.  He might have used a ST later on.  The guys in the NE were some of the first to adopt the ST as a CL stunt motor.

When I restored Windy's second Sweeper, the engine pictured powered it. Unfortunately, it had ingested some dirt, scoring the piston. I had a spare OS 61 and we used it to test fly the plane. I was really impressed with how well it flew. As I recall, it weighed around 100 ounces.

You can get an idea of the size when comparing it to the Nobler in the third photo.
