Who sees a posting?
« on: November 01, 2022, 04:58:26 PM »
I am curious.  I try and post in the forum appropriate to the post but unless I post it in the Open Forum it may be days or even never that I get a response.  In the Open forum responses are quick.  Who sees a new post?

Who sees a post depends on what forum they are looking at.
I almost never look at any forum except the Open forum.
If I get interested in a subject I will read it in the Open forum.
Then if the Moderator moves it to the subject matter forum....I will follow it over to that new forum and continue reading or posting as needed.

Dave, thanks.  When I log in I see all new posts in all forums.  I am starting to think that most don't.

The answer to the original question here is, anyone that looks.

All anyone here has to do is take a quick scroll down look through the other forum categories. Do this from the forum Home Page. The "New Posts" icon to the left of each category title tells you if there are new posts within it since you last opened it. It's the icon at the far left of each category title that looks like a letter page. With just a glance at that icon you don't even have to actually open the category to tell if there's a new post or reply to an existing post. The icon is "highlighted" if there has been something new added to the category since last time you opened it, not highlighted if not.
It's all very easy, keeps things organized (when posts are placed properly), and makes good sense to have the forum designed that way. Anyone who isn't picking through all the other categories offered here is missing out on a LOT of stuff!
Getting back to the question, when your post is placed in an appropriate category instead of the Open Forum you may actually find responses coming quicker and more often. No offense, but if you're not seeing responses it's likely from a lack of interest (or general forum activity) more than anything else.

My experience is quite different and apparently so is my home page.  I get this when I log in:
Hello Ken Culbertson
Show unread posts since last visit.
Show new replies to your posts.
The links cover all forums.

I duplicated a recent post that had zero responses since posting it this morning in the "Getting Amped Up" forum into the Open Forum and had three responses within a few minutes.  There has to be something in my setup that is different from others.

Nope, its just seeing more traffic, where someone will undoubedtly feel the urge to comment.
This very post is proof of that. If this were in any other forum, I'd not see it and not comment on it.

I've found the same thing, the specific threads don't see much traffic, so replies are slow, or non existent.

I log in , check the link that says show unread posts.  If there is something there I like I may look at it.  If not I click on show all post read.   I am getting to the point that there are some that don't comprehend what I have posted/responded to a post. D>K

Thanks Dan. That's also the link (address) that I have saved in my favorites for accessing the SH site, just one click and I'm starting out right there. Can't imagine it being any easier.

some great posts got lost in the forums due to lack of participation or reply from members, even a "good job" would help the post to have more visibility and make other members aweare of them
lately i have seen a lot of remotely related c/l posts (like building or technic) but curiosity or past stuff abounds
seems a worldwide trend , in brazil nobody cares to build or fligh anymnore. but whatsapp c/l groups are 12 hours non stop reminiscent chat. if someone post a building in progress or some tech stuff the chat stops.

While I haven't looked at my 'settings' in years, it might be possible to make some of the forums not appear, or make it so you don't get any notifications of responses to your post. Might not, but I'd guess that Sparky or Randy would know.  y1 Steve

It may be that many only look at the Open forum.
I always click the "Show unread posts since last visit" link below my handle near the top. That seems to give all the threads where something has happened since my last visit.

That is how I "surf" the forums as well.  I can't find where that is an option.  Does everybody get that link?
