If anyone knows or has a way of finding out for me id severely appreciate it.

I tried emailing AMA 2 days ago but yet to hear anything.

If it were me, I'd call AMA and talk to a real person. Emails have a way of being ignored.

Well low n behold I just got an email from AMA.

No news as of yet but atleast they responded.

"Dear Jamie,

Thank you for your email. Membership number records are held in the membership department so I’m cc’ing our Membership Director, Shawn, on this email. He may be able to help you with your question. We are unable to give out names of current members at HQ, however this possibly could be a deceased member’s number. Please note there are some other caveats to the search. It is possible more than one person had that number. Within the first 20 or so years of AMA coming into being, numbers started being reassigned if a person did not renew their membership in time. Thus, there could have been multiple people with the number 6653 since the airplane you found was built. And, to add to the mix, we do not have membership number records prior to 1974, so if someone else had that number prior to 1974, we would not know who that was."

I wouldn't get my hopes up on this, Jamie. One of our club members emailed or called AMA HQ and gave his number instead of name. They apparently didn't know who he was and asked for his name.

One ploy that might work would be to request that number, but unless you ARE SOMEBODY, it's not easy to get a 4 digit number...like mine! I have NO idea how I got a 4 digit number, but I've had it since I joined at the first contest I ever entered. The one you are researching is only a bit lower than mine, which I got in early 1963.

I have a 4 digit ama number. When you get a cd rating, they knock off the first two numbers if you have a six digit number.

Well, I'm close to being that poor chap. My original number was/is 65555. Here's a pic from the "Dark Ages" (when my hair was dark... shucks, when I even HAD hair) of me holding one of my planes w/AMA number thereon:

Yes, a Fox 36X. Given the era, likely a BB version.

That pic was actually taken in the early 1970s. I think I was still working at Fox Mfg, but can't remember for sure. I'd have to dig up the original pic and see if I thought to write a date on it. Things like dates and such that just weren't too important to me/us "back then". We were going to stay young forever and live forever.

You know, on the inside, I still feel like the kid that's in that picture. Now, without fail, when that kid stands in front of a mirror and sees that the old man staring back at him, the thought always hits me: "WTH happened??"

You never forget your AMA number........I've had three .... in 1956, it was 12592, in 1967, it was 40838, and from 1986 through 2014, it was 40838. I gave AMA membership up in 2014 when electric C/L, R/C and drones had taken firm control of the organization and I began to wonder what I was getting for my membership money. Model Aviation Magazine sure wasn't cutting it. .................. JUST WONDERING ........... Does anyone have AMA number 666 ? .....

No, I tracked him to the results in an IMAC Contest. He did find him. I couldn't w/o his name but with it I got him too.

The absolute on 2 reasons I have an AMA membership is cause my club requires one and every contest I fly at requires it. Otherwise I could buy a kit a year with the 75 bucks i toss.
