Samuel Flies the PT-19

Getting a little cabin fever here so we dusted of a very beat up Cox PT-19 for some fun in the driveway.  Sam did pretty good considering what he was flying. We are looking forward to hitting some contests again this year. I really enjoy watching him learn this hobby.

Kid's got good form.  How short of lines do you need to fly there, and if he drops altitude will he wrap it around your mailbox?

I'd be tempted to build something with a built-up symmetrical wing and do stunts from there.

Its on 22's. It's the camera he was actually 15 ft. from the mailbox. Tim he's already flying a Skyray .35 and a Twister we were just farting around today. He has mastered take off's, level flight and landing by himself. Our big goal this summer is to teach him to loop. I have half a dozen beaters ready for him to use this summer to get there. He may wreck them all but we'll sure have fun doing it.

When I said I'd be tempted, I meant I'd be tempted -- I never did make a built-up wing 1/2-A ship, and never got one to stunt much at all.

Going through lots of airplanes is a good plan.  My kids were just to upset at the notion of breaking real hardware to really enjoy RC, and the problem extends to control line.  You're blessed to have a kid who likes to fly with you.

If you want a really good 1/2A stunt ship, I highly suggest the Mini Stunt Rocket from BlackHawk Models.  It's a really good flyer. Probably the best 1/2A I have ever built and flown.

Mike try 15 slow combat or something like that. A friend Dick Imhoff made Samantha a 15 size and with in a week she had the whole beginner pattern. It was real slow going before this. She still has the plane. One week after the nats she learned the full pattern, and never looked back. Once she could do it with the combat plane she could do it with any plane. Dick also flew some combat with her and she learned how to really fly a plane, not just hold up and count three.

Sam is really doing great, hope he will get to fly at the nats again this year.

The important questions: Did any of the neighbors call the police and whine? Did any armed FAA agents appear (dressed in camo) to arrest y'all if you weren't registered?  Steve

No black helicopters or SWAT Teams Steve. My neighbors are all pretty cool. We actually closed off the road at the summer block party and let all the kids in the subdivision have a go with a Cox plane. Even a few grown ups tried it.

   That looks like about like my first Cox airplane flight - on the walk going to the front door at my Aunt Glo's house. Mine was the camo P-51.

Have lost count how many youngsters have been on a Cox plane.   My son even took all 3 of his sisters and got them flying the Cox PT_19.   Tell Sam he did better than I would have on those short lines.   By the way start him off doing climbs and dives and the wing overs.   Once they do wing overs I tell them a loop is a wing over that is just done a little tighter.  Just pull into a up control about 1/2way up and give more up, then level off when plane is back to level.   And most of all don't change your mind once you start.    The out side loops are done on the sown ward side of a wing over, only using down control.

  That's a great idea Steve, I've got a bunch of combat foamies that could be tamed down and I could put suction engines on for him to fly. Regardless, I will build as many as it takes for him to master this hobby. We are just having so much fun doing this together. I am so proud of him.

You will never regret the time and money you put in with him. It coming to a end quickly with Samantha and i , but it has been a great ride while it lasted. Looks like this years a go, but will see how long it lasts.
