As is generally the case, rumors and truemors concerning the border crossings proved to be fairly nonsensical.
Going north it was a 20-minute wait at around 2:00 in the afternoon on Friday. No strip searches, no problem.
I had an ear giving me some discomfort, leaving for home mid-afternoon on Saturday. I told Joan of the situation, gave her a big kiss and boogied. Apologies, but I simply did not feel up to giving everybody the same story over and over. It was easier just to rocket...
Border crossing again no problem, although I was asked, "Are you going to get a current passport anytime soon?"
Yep, I am still using the passport which expired in 1999, this backed up with a current drivers license.
More, especially in light of the folk known to have stayed home due to complications at the border: Going either direction there were troops out on foot, wandering amongst the cars. Going to the US one of these youngsters was asking folk if they had a passport or not. If so he would direct you to the left and it was a slightly faster lane. If passports were lacking one was directed to the right.
I saw not the slightest indication that US citizens were not being allowed to return home or even inconvenienced in any way.
Keep that in mind for the contest next year!
