I have two 40FP's that were reworked quiet a few years back and I cannot remember which is which. One was done by Randy Smith and the other by Tom Dixon. The only visual difference is the muffler....one has the stinger cut off flush with the muffler can. Help?

Hi Alan,
I am not sure you can tell from the outside. Don't know if Rany did any markings to his, IIRC, Tom never has.
They do run a good bit differently, though.

Randy cuts a couple of cooling grooves on the out side of the head,
he also machines a glow plug , for lack of a better term, heat sink on top of the head.

Hi Walter,
Thanks for reminding me of that! I am so used to seeing Randy's engines that I had forgot the two grooves and milling around the glow plug. Those grooves are so common around here that I don't even notice them anymore. ;D

Thank you for the info...mystery solved.
Walter, you were dead on about the rings on the head and the machining around the plug.

Unless this is a really old rework, Randy normally signs his engines, and reworks with "Randy", and a number on the bottom of the crankcase. Each brand/size engine has it's own series of numbers. This is good to know if you ever have one lost or stolen.
