Painting Ultracote
« on: October 08, 2017, 03:36:19 AM »
Anyone out there who knows if UltraCote can be painted? If so, any requirements for type of paint?

Yes it can. I use Rustoleum 2X spray cans. No special prep just a good cleaning.
I may be wrong but I doubt it.

I paint all of my ultracoted (or monokoted) wings/stab
i sand with 800/1000 grit sandpaper, spray with auto lacquer or polyester and clear coat everything.
but i still paint fuselage in a traditional way
on the first plane the ultracote is white, everything else painted
second plane is red monokote and trim painted

Thanks. Gave me a rest to how to proceed. I wanted a seamless transition between the painted fuse and Ultracoteed wing/stab/rudder. Always used Polyspan on my wings before, but for my Trivial Persuit I'm going to try the Ultracover.

i have tried 2 methods:
masked wing/stab 1/2" over the sheeting and primed the fuselage up to the masking tape, then monokoted over that 1/2 lip very close to the fuselage.
either ordered matched lacquer colors to the monokote and painted a lip of 1/4 over the monokote, or painted the fuselage color and designed to advance over the wings to seal the gap and made a good color match.
the other method was discarded later: monokoted first and then primed the fuselage over the monokote lip, but this lead to a "bridge" hard to get rid of later.
either way will work fine

The only problem is that you can't apply masking tape or any tape on the painted areas. It may well pull the paint off. And the directions say it takes 7 days for the paint to cure when painting  plastic. It will dry normally but not completely cure for 7 days.

not at all, the white is painted and the black checker too. i have sanded with 800 grit sandpaper the blue ultracote, sprayed the white and after 2 days, applyed the black. just need to be really carefull unmasking and using low tack vinyl mask
