Tower Hobbies has perfect gasket material. It is green and works about the same as the old black gasket did. Some guys use aluminum cut into a ring that fits inside the bolt holes and for a gasket. That is what I have in my ringed one, and I have the Perfect gasket in my lapped one. Just don't try to use regular auto gasket material as it will leak the first time you run it.

Replace the gasket between the sleeve and the case also. Many forget that one and have run problems. It can be made from thin material like a magazine cover.

Rusty, I do not know what the green Perfect gasket has in it, but I do know it works OK. I have used it in my Fox 59's, Anderson Spitfires, and Atwood Super Champs without problems. I do not know of anyplace that sells the old black rubberized asbestos stuff anymore.

Big Art told me that aluminum gaskets are the way to go because the cooling is better, better heat conduction. Some would argue that but it sounds plausible to me.

I would pretty much agree with that Randy, but I have had a few that would not seal up with aluminum. I had one that would seal, but it warped the case and lost compression when I tightened down the head. All of them sealed up and had good compression with fibre gaskets. Could be just me though as I have not heard of anyone else having that problem.

Oh! You have one of those. My old lapped one had one of those that looks like a brass eyelet in it. I ruined it getting it out, and had the same question you have. I took a brass screw and worked it down with a file in my drill press so that it was a press fit in the crank, and then filed down the screw head to clear the back plate. It has been running that way for years without problems. On my later ringed one if I remember right, it does not have a rod retainer in the crank. I could not find an eyelet like the original.

I would think that would work just fine Rusty. If I had it to do over again that is what I think I would do also. If you have some Teflon, that would work well too as it is a little easier to work with than nylon. Either should work though.
