Where to buy #11 blades
« on: March 27, 2019, 02:22:07 PM »
I'm getting back into the building mode and near the end of my blade stash. It's time to restock. I've been using genuine xacto but wonder what brand everyone is using and where are you buying them? I'm wanting to buy bulk instead of 2-3 at a time.
Thanks.
Bill P.

I'm using surgical blades. There are all kinds of different types of blades. I've purchased a box of 100 #11 surgical (or dental) blades, similar to X-Acto #11, with a handle for $6.50 including shipping on eBay last April. They are extremely sharp and I have the scars to prove it!

I just got all the inventory of #11 blades at WALMART, and got a new x-acto knife too!

Avoid XActo "knock off" blades.  I bought some from Harbor Freight that look nice, but do not last very long.  I now get the real deal from my LHS.

I like the Americanline #11. Much better than Xacto brand. See: https://www.amazon.com/American-Line-66-0195-Carbon-Blades/dp/B00VWJ00VW/ref=sr_1_2?keywords=American+razor+%2311&qid=1553724323&s=gateway&sr=8-2
BTW- their carbon steel, single edge razor blades are also very good.  https://www.amazon.com/American-Safety-Razor-66-0362-100-Pack/dp/B0035ER2AO/ref=sr_1_19?crid=YB7I81Z4B7MX&keywords=american+razor+blades&qid=1553724755&s=gateway&sprefix=American+razor%2Caps%2C191&sr=8-19

My test for sharpness is to shave the end grain on a soft piece of balsa.

Thanks Norm - I am sick of having to change blades 2-3 times a building session.  Those look really good.  Ordered a set.

I just keep a sharpening stone handy and put a few strokes on each side of the #11 blades. If you want really outstanding quality #11 blades, the Martor #86 is the best you can buy IMO...Gamakatsu sharp, made in Germany from Solingen steel, very impressive price! I've seen and handled one...<sigh>  y1 Steve
