Where does it end?
« on: September 05, 2009, 09:56:00 AM »
I just got an e-mailed contest flyer for a contest.  One event has twelve classes and the other one has five.  In stunt not only do we have the skill classes, but we have Old Time, Classic, Profile 40 and lately N-30.  Speed has always had a class for the different engine sizes plus jet.  I can remember going to a contest and flying Navy Carrier, Combat, Rat Race, Stunt and balloon burst.  Yes it made for a long day, but, I was much younger back then.

When my son started flying we flew Profile Carrier and I flew Class II.  Racing was Scale Racing and Slow Rat.  He did not like flying stunt and I had stopped flying combat years earlier with the engine starting rule.  I love all the different facets of control line.  I am working on throttle controlled planes now as I rebuild the nose of the Arctic Fox.

I guess I am getting old, but, do we really need so many events.  I think that is the demise of racing and combat is the rules are something else.  It takes big bucks to compete in any of the CL events other than stunt.  I have not mentioned scale as that is another world to me.  I guess stunt is as big as it is because I can still compete with my old Fox .35 stunt when I want to or fly the plane with the 300 dollar engine.  But, I feel sorry for the club and CD putting on a contest with 12 different classes of Navy Carrier with trophies to third place.  I won't worry about it tho as it is just too far for me to drive.  Our local contest dropped carrier as we could not get enough entries to give the trophies away.  Guess I have it off my chest now.  Have fun,  DOC Holliday R%%%%

John.  If you think there are too many C/L events at a contest, you should look at the SAM contests.  So many events, I've lost count.  I suspect that someone gets a wild idea giving them some sort of contest advantage, and they push for a new event.  I pity any CD trying to organize a SAM contest.

I don't fly combat, carrier, speed, team race, or any of the other splinter events.  So I have enough to do concentrating on OTS and PAMPA stunt.

personally,
I actually am very glad to have so many events.
I drive on average 400 miles each way to attend a contest, ( none any closer) I really hate the thought of driving nearly 1000 miles in a weekend and flying once or twice,, so, for me, as long as I can field airplanes, the more the better,, just my two cents worth
For years the rat race had me going around in circles, Now I do it for fun!

I tend to agree with Mark. Where else but in stunt can you enter just about every event using the same plane?

I think here on the West Coast, most Speed events are flown "Record Ratio"...highest percentage of the record wins the 1st place trophy. It's been that way since I flew speed in the mid-'60's. The same could be done for Navy Carrier...very easily. Racing just isn't racing without 3-up. If we have a site that will allow combat to be flown, the combat guys run their own events. Some sites have no grass, or just not enough room. We do what we can with what we have.

What would really help would be if the sport fliers in the club would show up and help with setup, teardown, tabulation, etc. Adequate manpower makes it a lot easier, more relaxed, and more fun for all.  R%%%% Steve

Almost all the helpers at the Delta Park contest were the "club" flyer's. I enjoyed doing the pull tests and generally doing what ever was needed.Even helping launch for the old time event. Others were manning the carrier deck and helping with combat. Plus we had one of the best tabulators and organizers I have ever seen, that would be Barbra White. I know all the others helping had a good time and also learned a lot.

Don...Youse guys did a great job on the contest in April. The weather was nice Sunday...but not nice Saturday, from what I heard. April showers bring May flowers!  @@^ Steve

I think we should have an over 70 stunt event for us older fliers with young ideas. First prize would be Viagra or Vitalis. HB~> HB~>
