The engine running season is about here.  When presenting model engines to the public or to other enthusiasts, it is important that things go well or you will loose your audience.

Therefore meticulous preparation in an organized fashion is required.  One must be sure there is no chance for even the tiniest detail to be overlooked!

I ran the G Mark 5 cylinder radial. Prepped it to start for the first time said that it was doubtful that it would hand start. It started on the first flip. Hand started it for the rest of the time that I had it. Got rid of it as it had the power of a worn out 09 engine. It is a .30 displacement engine.They went up in price for the collectors and I guess they are about the only ones that would still want them.

Here is my Saito 90T twin on my 76" Lazy Ace. It fly,s it pretty well beings it weighs 14 pounds. Flat bottom wings and stab do wonders for low power.

Did anybody notice the railroad tracks in the back ground?  If a coal train came through it would drown out those radials.  One summer I helped remodel a house nest to a railroad track.   Even after the train engine passes there is still a lot of noise and then the tail engine come rumbling through.

It looks like they are running on propane?  What else could be in those white tanks?  An interesting thought.  It also looks like his props are "clubs" used for bench testing.  They make just enough wind to keep the engine cool, but not enough to cause instability of his mounts (which do not appear to be very well anchored).

Last time I saw a long nose Fox .59 run was in the late fifties. I remember it being LOUD!

This is what was left after I cleaned things up.

Way back in days gone - around 1965 +/- - I had a fair engine collection, mostly sparkers. I had fun with a GHQ. I finally cut a 1 X 6 board about 12" long. Set up 4 wheels to spin freely under the board. Mounted an engine mt. to accommodate a 12" prop and ignition/fuel stuff. That engine started well but I could NOT get it to run adequately to pull its own weight. I even tried it with a glow plug and the ignition stuff off the platform. Finally got down to a 9-6 prop and some extra thrust by sound (NO TACHS back then that I knew about )  but the setup would NOT pull its weight.  I have heard that some of the old-timer FF folks have used the GHQ with success.
I did successfully fly a CL model with a Thor 29(30) on spark and glow.
So  have you had any trys with your GHQ?

The 59 is STILL very loud!  I run MY GHQ CCW no problem, the timer will turn 360 deg.  Using 2:1 gas oil, mine turns a 13 x 5 Master Airscrew maybe 4500-5000 rpm;   it would definitely move its own weight!  It has the stamped piston and fair to moderate compression.
