Whatchabuilding?
« on: April 07, 2006, 07:28:16 PM »
Now that the on-line build has started I need to try to either, quick finish up my current project or put it on hold for a while.  I am in the final building stages of my new profile (I might sneak a teaser photo in).  This on-line build will be my second built up fuse airplane.  A green box Nobler twentysome years ago being the first.

Anyway, I've seen some of the beginning pics from the guys in the on-line build.  What do some of you other guys have on the bench?  Whachabuilding?  Pictures would be great. ;D

OK - - - here is quick peek of my profile being held together with masking tape.

I have an IMPACT ready for Tissue. All the bones and six coats of clear come to 28.2 oz. Hope I can keep it light.

Smoothie wing done ready for fuse
Classic Venus ready to glue together
and a Giant Stuntmaster ready to be cut out.

Hi Scott,
The Impact has had my interest since the article came out, but it has just never been a popular build around here.  This has deterred me since any help would be tough since no one else around here has flown one much.

I *think* you will be surprised by the Giant Stuntmaster.  I know I was!  I put a Veco 35 on mine, but keep wondering what it would do with a Leo 37!  Amazing flight qualities for such a "simple" design.

Which Venus is it?  The early one or Mario Rondonelli's?

Thanks guys.  I always had a thing for those little jets.  I have no plans for it, just building using moment numbers from many other proven designs.  I was inspired by the cover of the April 1974 FM.  Dave Rees did a Talon with a foam wing that I always thought was pretty cool.  Mine has a 52-1/4 wingspan and is 42" long.  I built the wing using Tom Morris's Millennium wing construction techniques (first time for me).  The fuse is semi built up with the controls being hidden inside(also first time). The stabilizer is built up and sheeted (again first time) and the elevators are solid sheet.  I'm going to use an OS FP.40 for power with a really kick-but spinner from Randy Smith.

Not sure about the Thunderbird scheme.  My finishing talents don't go too far beyond how it comes out of the spray can.  I think it just might be solid white.

Hi Chris,
That sounds like it should be killer!  I do like the enclosed controls from the looks department.  Very clean.
Spend the time trimming it, and you should really enjoy that one!
OS 40FP is a strong engine, and those spinners from Randy are really nice.  8)

Chris,

I love the profile. Makes me want to build a P-40 (that would be a first.

Hmm, lets see. I'm just about masked for a third color on the new PA plane. That's about it. I'm considering my next plane. Sort of depends on how the new PA plane flies. If good, I'll get back to the Classic plane I started. If not, I'll probably start the Trivial Pursuit RSM kit I have.

On the Impact: Of course, since PW flies the Impact, you see a lot of them around here. Or variations thereof. Bill, it is a great flying plane and very easy (I'm told) to trim. Wilt a PA 40 or OS40VF on a pipe, it's a killer if built around 60oz.

Where do you find information on how to hide the controls on the profiles?

Sorry, I don't have any infor on hiding the controls, I'm just making it up as I go.  I know it's been done before but I personally have not seen it.

As RootBeard says - Lets see some pictures guys!  Even the stuff you might have crashed this weekend (if you did).
