What would wrap around a 40 RE

What plane would be a good for a PA 40 UL on a pipe.
I currently have it in a Vector but I can't drop the pipe in the fuse.
Looking for a plane that will accommodate the pipe and still be a good flyer.

An Oriental Plus isn't a bad flying airplane. It took me up to expert with the PA 40UL in it. You could also do a Staris/Satona/Shrike with some mods from Randy for the lighter motor.

The smaller  SV  series   Satona , Staris, Shrike   would be very good  for  that engine, or a standard  Vector  with an added  pipe  belly
They are  about 630 to 640 sq in

I am about to drop a piped PA40UL into an RSM Oriental Plus, which is about 605 inches. Model is ready for clear coats and then (ugh) buffing. Anyway, a Dee Rice design that reportedly flys very well. Designed for piped 40 from ground up, not retrofitted. The model was recommended to me by a top West Coast stunt guy. Excellent quality kit, as usual from RSM. If I can get the picture from cell phone to computer I will post a photo.

I understand that Bob Hunt may have some Randy Smith designs scaled down slightly to about 600 inches, precovered wing and tail pieces. Of course need to scratch build the fuselage in such case to get appearance points.

The Intrepid XL  (SV-12)  is a large ship, 60.5 inches  and same as a SV-11.  The PA 40 UL  will pull it, but you would need a lot of nose weight  to balance the plane.
 The smaller SV series airplanes  I suggested were designed for a PA 40 RE, and will work perfectly with a PA 40 UL, The Ultra Light  is smaller across the case bottom, so you would need to resize the  internal formers, as you would with any airplane  to make the motor mounts the right size.
There is also a plane called the Starion  that works well with the  PA 40 UL, all the ones I recommended are  World Class flying ships

Well, so much for my 76 year old memory! 

Mike put the airplane on a tee shirt for VSC one year in the 90's.  Worked very well with a PA40RE (Large case), on a pipe, but it was a much heavier engine than the UL.  I still have two of the old PA40RE engines and they still run very, very well!  Lots of RPM and lots of power.

I don't remember what length lines I was on.  If I were to start flying it again from the beginning, I would start with .015 x 62ft lines. 

I'm currently running 63ft .018" lines on my Staris, which is slightly larger than the Oriental Plus

I am pretty partial to Bob Hunt's Saturn.  Great flying airplane.  The PA 40 would slip in very nicely.  Around 630 square inches if memory serves.

I have to say, from personal experience I would go with the Satona/Staris/Shrike. I flew my Satona to a top 5 finish at the US Nationals with a PA 40 and it was me and not the plane/power that kept me from winning. I have thought a few times about putting a PA 40 ultra lite in the nose, currently I am running Mag parts to balance it out.

Mine is a few ounces under 50 and is a killer set-up. A winning record, and a pleasure to fly. The Shrike and Staris are the same plane as the Satona I fly, the Vector 40 is pretty much an un-piped version of the same.

I can post pictures of the design if you like.

Bob McDonald has been flying a glorious USA1 with one of those little critters and (given the size of the USA!...a big ship!) it is amazingly agile and never lacking for power.  One of the more impressive combinations I've seen in recent years.

I would guess it depends on plane and conditions but my Vector gets 4.5oz per pattern.

My setup burns about 5.25-5.5oz of fuel. And I think the 40UL weighs 8.2oz

Not a pipe. It is a Randy carbon muffler. Very light! Works well with this engine.

It does have a baffle but it is not "tuned". Engine runs just fine without a pipe.
I wish they were still available.
