Raffles, yay or nay, opinions
« on: September 02, 2022, 09:20:33 AM »
Hi modelers,
I always look forward to a raffle at a contest. After all, if I go to a raffle for my kids school, it's a gift card for a spa and a basket of candy and wine. Stuff I could care less about. But I was a little surprised when a fellow modeler said that nobody likes raffles because we all have everything we could ever need. We just do it to raise extra money for the contest. Really? I really loved the last VSC raffle and Roseburg raffles.
Who loves a good raffle?
Who don't?

There is always a great raffle at the Tulsa fall contest.  NOBODY leaves until it's done and is much anticipated.

I always buy raffle tickets. Best strategy is to buy just before the drawing, at least that works if they use one of those gerbil raceway things to mix 'em up. I've won two G.Loomis fishing rods (not cheap!) and at one of last year's FF contests at Tangent, Oregon, I won enough stuff (which I donated to the guy that was my protoge 50 years ago) that it was embarrassing. I think I bought $40 worth of tickets and won about $80 > $100 worth of stuff for "the kid".  LL~ Steve

Here in Tulsa, we make most of our yearly contest profit from our raffle.  We have some good people who buy a lot of tickets. We have the ticket buyers write their first and last initials on the back of the ticket. This speeds the raffle up tremendousley.

We are fortunate that some of our contestants donate items to our raffle. A lot of our clubmembers donate items to the raffle also.

If you really wanted an item from the raffle and didn't win it; try going up to the winner and ask if they want to sell it. Many times they do, and you can get what you want.
