Title: what should I ask Santa for?
Post by: Scott Richlen on December 06, 2018, 02:29:33 PM
I got plenty of kits and engines and standard building equipment (Dremels, X-actos, etc.) so don't need more of that.  I do a lot of building and am just wondering if there is some equipment (outside of the standard sanders, scroll saw, etc.) that I should put on my wish-list?  I do wish that I could find a pencil sized grinder that actually worked instead of the big and clunky Dremel.  But there must be a couple of little things that would really help in the shop that I'm not aware of.  What's your recommendation?

When my Mother was still alive she would ask what I wanted for Christmas even though she knew what the answer would be.   I would tell her a big pan of her cinnamon rolls would be great.  Sure miss them.   Now what would I do with a young good looking women around the house except look at her and wonder what good is she.  My wife of 50+ years is more than enough and when I try to tell her how great she is, she wants to know what I've been up to. A word of wisdom that my father passed on to me - don't tell her.  No matter what it was, good or bad,  it will be used against you - FOREVER.

The best advice my ol' Dad ever gave me was to never get married. Apparently, he gave my older brothers the same advice, and they were better listeners.

However, I would plead the case for two more Robart Incidence Meters. Put one on the wing at the fuselage and one on each wingtip to check for warps, etc. Mount one on the engine mounts, one on the wing and one on the stabilizer, etc. Less risk of inaccuracies while moving the device from one place to the other. If you've got three, consider the possibilities with four of those rascals.  D>K Steve

If the FAA has there way you better ask for a boat or a tether car. Make sure the tether car does not bounce and become a drone.

It seems like you can never have too many clamps. Or how about a nice soldering station if you don't already have one? A fairly recent tool acquisition of mine was a small metal bending brake from Harbor Freight. I make and sell aluminum profile landing gear, otherwise it might not get much use.

Anyway, if he brings me a drone, I'm going to confiscate his cookies and milk.

If you are smart, you will ask Santa for good health....which you must have to enjoy control line building and especially flying.  I lost my knees and my control line days are over.  The bad part of that is, that I have enough kits, engines and all that goes with them for at least another 200 years............Oh well. use it while you've got it........good health that is.   D>K    H^^

Ask Santa and the Missus....For the wisdom to re read this list in 12 days and decide to take better care of your(our)  self.....

There is a growing number of us that are still fairly young but road hard and put away wet too often.... got lots of stuff but at 63 all I can do now a days is bench run one of my 75 engines...and no point building any of the 43 kits I have or assembling the 4 ARFs....
Broken back sucks

That said the three MOST used power tools in my shop
Small Drill Press
Small Band Saw
Small 1" belt and 5" disc sander

I might add that I have 2 of the 8000 series Dremel Battery rotary tools that do a lot of work

Stocking stuffers... easy the super cheap 6 inch plastic battery powered micrometer .001 from Harbor Freight...very cheap and they convert or measure MM, .fractional---1/4 , 3/8 etc---and decimal---.0045 etc......they are cheap and no mater how many times I drop it ...1/4 thick Balsa is still 1/4 inch thick.... not so after dropping my $285 Starret 10" .0005 instrument

Can anyone recommend a pencil grinder (and no, I don't mean a pencil sharpner... mw~)?  I added those little laser-cut rib holders to my wish list,  but there must be other helpful tools....

Scott,   This is what you want:  https://www.ebay.com/i/122856305744?chn=ps
Click the link.  If it doesn't work, Google:  "Marathon III Micromotor".
The link I pasted above, is to one that is for sale for $69.99 and that is a steal.  it's a professional Dental quality model.
Although this unit is made in China, I have one and it's very nice, I love it.
Be careful, there are tons of lesser quality imitations out there that are total crap.  Some places sell the hand piece separate, so make sure it's included.
Also make sure the hand-piece is the 4 pin type (it's actually 3 and one is a locator).
I am also a wood carver (30+years, Duck decoys, Santas, etc) and I actually own this for the detail work on my wood carvings in Basswood or Tupelo.  It has plenty of power for Balsa also.
A purpose built Foredom Micromotor is about $300-350ish, so at $70, this Marathon III unit is a steal.
Do a Google on "Foredom Micromotor" - and you'll see, it's the same thing.
You won't regret getting this micro grinder.
