"Happy Jack" airplane
« on: April 02, 2011, 09:29:33 AM »
Went to see my parents yesterday. My father was telling me about the first contest he won. He was a teenager so it was around '52 or '53. Said he was flying a "Happy Jack". Anyone know the details of this airframe? I have a picture of him, the plane and trophy somewhere. It doesn't show much detail.

Thanks
Steve

Could it have been a Jumping Jack?

There was a controline airplane by that name back in the same time period.

The Jumping Jack was a Consolidated Models profile from the early 50's It looked like the Jubilee but a little smaller. I'd love to have another one of them but the thing had no full sized plans and Tony Drago isn't offering any for sale.It is a rare kit as I have never seen one for sale on any forum or fleabay. Even rarer is the twin Jumping Jack.

HI Dennis,

I never saw a built Jumping Jack, nor the Twin.  But from seeing the Consolidated ads, I thought the Twin would have been real cool. After only about 35, or so, years I did end up with a Fancy Pants! LOL!! (well actually, Aaron did, but I did get to fly it. ;D )

It looks something like the Jubilee but a little smaller. This is a picture of my Jubilee and If I can get a copy of the old Consolidated add I'll post a picture of the Jumping Jack. But this is actually very close to it.

I found the add in one of the early CLW mags.It would still be nice to have some plans or dimensions, I'd like to build something close to surprise my father with. Maybe a Brodak Clown with a 36"Ws, would be close?

Thanks

Steve,
In my opinion a super Clown is a poor second cousin to the Consolidated Jumping Jack. Not because I think that it flies better but because of the fond memories I have of the Consolidated Models. I've had the Super Clown, Still have one, but I never met the owner of PDQ, I did, however, meet Art Hassalbach the owner of Consolidated. It is the little things I guess that shape our opinions of models that we have owned.

I understand the sentimental parts of flying. I still want to watch my father fly against Dan Patton(dayton, ohio late 1960's). They had some great matches. Also remember being seven or eight yrs old and launching Voodoos with reworked St .35s. Lets see kids now days do that!

I was surfing looking for anything on planes form when I was a kid and read this and decided to join the stunt hanger forum. One was the Debolt Continental and the other was Consolidateds Jumpin Jack. Well I have a Jumpin Jack. My Dad started building it in March of 57 and finished it in April around the time I was born. So for sentimental reasons no matter how bad a crash my Dad and now I have kept it going. The wing and engine ( Jonhson 35) are all thats left of the original plane, but it's still looks like a Jumpin Jack. In 73 I helped my Dad make the second of the two kits he bought in the 50's. I had the smarts to trace all the parts on the back of another set of plans. The original instruction sheet ( which I have to) was too small. They are both somewhere buried in my box of plans. I can have the wife take a pict. of it and copy the tracings I did of the parts if anyone is interested. The Ribs would need to cleaned up on a computor and laser cut for best results. Leading edge of wing is not like anything normal. No1/4 stick or anything. Just the two 1/16 sheets meeting. for a sharp LE. The WOW was the same way I think. It may not be a pattern bird, but it sure is fun to fly and just burn holes in the sky. Not a plane to just go around in circles with. To much fun to just do things with. Has no landing gear, your typical 50 hand launch bird. And it launches easy, stable, and with only a little toss. Someday I hope to get my grandson to fly it, and pass it on. Mike
