Title: What large pinned hinges are available these days?
Post by: Jim Hoffman on November 24, 2012, 04:12:25 PM

I am looking for a substitute for Klett RK-9 hinges
What similar pinned control surface hinges are available these days?

I have used my last Klett RK-9 Hinges
These are heavy duty nylon pinned ¼ scale hinges (7/8” wide x 1 3/8” long)

An internet search for Klett RK-9 was not fruitful.

An forum search indicates Klett closed their doors about 2008, so any hinges out there are rather old. (nylon does not age that well)

I am very familiar w/ cloth hinges and used them on my last project.

Thx,
Jim Hoffman

The closest thing you will find is probably the Dubro #257.

Hey Jim, go to the Sig site and look at their X hinges.  I've used them for years and really like them.  I do have to trim a little flashing off each barrel for total loose movement, but it's a small price to pay for the quality you end up with.  They have two sizes.

Hi Jim,
Sad story about the Klett hinges isn't it .
I've had luck taking the large Dubro hinges clipping the end off the pins, removing them and replacing them with pins made like the Klett pins made from .045 music wire.  They are a little thicker than the Klett hinges and need a little more open slot but work very well.

I use the Dubro 257,  remove the cotter pins and replace with .046" continuous wire full span for removable surfaces.
Sometimes they will need a little detail clean-up of flashing to get rid of the clicking right at neutral.
