What is your favourite spinner?

Tru-Turn aluminum spinners are very accurately made and balanced.  They solved the balance problem on John Callentine's Seafury when other spinners caused vibrations.

Tru-Turn can cut the prop slot to suit your intended prop.  I was VERY pleased when they told me they have the geometry of the Cox-Resinger 3 blade CF props.

I always thought that the Froom or Veco spinners were excellent and are quite happy to get those cheap plastic ones with the screw on fronts and stick on my sons models so they can plant them better!

I guess they are under "new" management............. I say that because a few years ago I called them about cutting slots into a "Froom" spinner for me and they wouldn't do it!

The "Tru-Turns" are a bit heavier than a Veco or Froom and I don't care for the bolt in the front. Brodaks are the best modern spinner AFAIC!

I think Randy's are the best currently available....they have proper cuts for flat props. Brodak spinners and nice, but cut for 6 pitch props.
Something to consider when chosing a spinner is the back plate: Randy's are flush. The Brodak spinners have a 3/64" spacer molded into them, making them not interchangable with Randy's, unless you build for the Brodak and add a washer to an Aero Products. Both require adaptors, and I believe that the Brodak products are not available in anything but 1/4". Randy offers a couple different threads, most notably 5/16".


Plastic spinners  all seem slightly different. I prefer the Great Planes as they have an aluminum backplate with a 1/4" hole bored, easily enlarged for other cranks. The back is flush, so they work on a plane set up for a Randy/Aero spinner. They are held with screws....the included ones seem to be made of lead as the heads distort with use. Easily substituted for socket heads.

Tru-Turn absolutely makes a great spinner, I've used them for years.

Spinners as large as 4" on Moki 1.8!

Tru-Turn offers anodized colors. I purchased a red and a black one and the plating quality is perfect. I sold the red one to a SH modeler.

The black one is on my ARGO II.

Still, it's probably a matter of personal choice?

The reason Tru-Turn doesn't work on other brand spinners is because of liability. They will only work on their own products.

Tru-Turn, also has a 'return policy' for 'unused spinners.' That is, if you have an unused Tru-Turn spinner, even if it's old, you can send it back for credit.

They do have to examine the spinner.

I sent one back unused but a tad 'marked up,' and they declined. I knew they would have, but I tried anyway. 

I like the bolt in the front but I never use spinners smaller than 2.25".

I have to agree with Jim Hoffman that the True Turn spinners seem to be the best in terms of balance and the ideas of custom slots is very appealing.  The only thing I don't like about them is the ugly screw head in the front.

Randy Smith's spinners are excellent and very beautiful with perfectly matched nose cones that blend into the spinner.  I have a lot of them and generally use only those or Tru-Turns!  The slots in these spinners both two and three blades seem to match perfectly with Bolly type carbon props in 4 to 5 pitch.

The Brodak Spinners are very light but also very fragile.  Tighten them just a bit too tight and they will deform very easily.  They actually would be a good choice if they would do something about the terrible prop slots that really don't appear to fit anything very well!

I think you need to look at what you need. I like the Great Plains plastic electric spinners. They are very light and if you have a plain bearing engine they put a lot less load on the bearing (works well on the Fox's). If you are going for the polished aluminum I like the old Froom/Veco spun spinners. Again they are one of the lightest, so light bearing load.

Regarding machining the prop slots on Tru-Turn spinners, I would expect that the slots *could* be cut during the lathe turning process. A friend that owned his own machine shop showed me his trick CNC lathe that would turn a shaft with threads on the end AND cut a keyway (or multiple keyways) before taking the part out of the lathe. And that was about 20 years ago. I seem to recall that his "lathe" was a Daewoo product, in case you want one of your own!

My favorite spinner is hard to find as they don't make them anymore. Madusa, the lightest on the market. The only downfall in my opinion with this spinner is the mounting screw supplied. But have since made my own.
