What is this model?

Any one know if this craft is available in kit and/or plans. I think its called a Chief, but I can't remember where I copied it from.. just like the look of it, would like to build one. Was wondering what wing size and what engine would be used.

 The "Chief" was kitted by Veco. There were some clones available but I don't know if they are now. That one is nicely done.

From my feeble memory that is a model made to look like a Chief.  The Chief had a high aspect wing compared to length of the fuselage.  Also looking at size of engine the plane is not big enough unless that is a 60.  Where is Paul Smith as I think he was building one last year.

Judging by the stone pavers it is a fairly small plane. Perhaps a 30+ inch wing span give or take, the engine looks to be an OS. Could be a cheif clone, it certainly is the right size. The aluminum gear is certainly not 60's era however. There was the chief, the squaw, the papoose and a super chief as well if I remember. None had flaps so this is certainly a modification of some other design.

The Veco Chief was advertised as 53 inch span with a length of 38 inches. The wing area is 595 square inches and the flying weight of 30 ounces. Engine size is .29 to .35. The last one I built met it's fate when the outboard flap came loose. It hung by the flap horn and the plane did a roll in toward me and crashed almost at my feet.

The Veco Squaw has a wingspan of 38 1/2 inches and a length of 30 inches. The wing area is 346 square inches with a weight of 27 ounces. Engine size is .19 to .29. Because I don't like the cloth hinges, I used sewn thread to hold the flaps and elevators on.

Other than size the looks are close except the Squaw only had one cockpit.

Originally produced by Veco, the kit line was taken over by Dumas. After several years the rights to the kits were bought by Mr Spivey of Alabama who produced them again under the Aero Engineering label. The same cutting dies were used by each of the owners. Due to the dulling of the die edges the first produced kits had better cutting.

You might consider plans from Joe Wagner. He created the Super Chief for the 1950 Nats and redesigned the Chief for 1951.

Looks like it could also be a "Warrior".

Looking at the wing tip it doesn't look like a Veco type build. This looks like a sheet tip with a brace. Also the wheels look to be mounted on something other than the "A" frame wire supplied with the kits but someone could have changed that. The insignias on the wings are too small to be the decals supplied in the kits. Possibly painted on?

I did notice that the number "18" on the side of the fuselage is the same number that is on the picture in an advertisement I have for the Chief.

Sure looks like a chief. They are on EBay all the time. they sell upwards of $100.00. The chief is an excellent airplane and you will enjoy it. It must be carefully built in order to get straight fuselage and wing. A good Fox 35 will fly the chief well. I have seen a lot of models that used Fox 35's being flown with OS Max LA 25's. This could be a good combo but I have never seen one. There are no Veco plans for the chief or any of there models. They came with instructions with pictures. I am sure many sell the plans that have been made of the Chief. Try Tom Dixon.

Joe Wagner is a great guy, and has plans for both the Chief and Super Chief.  Someone here will surely be able to send you his email addy.

Joe's Chief and Super Chief are on the same plan. The redesign of the Chief and others never went into production. The previous version kits lasted until ANOTHER re-design came about.

I have Joe's Chief, Squaw, Scout (1/2A), and Dakota (FF). If you have never seen any of his plans, he includes notes on them which give insight on the designs, and some tourist information.

It looks like a Veco Squaw to me. They just added two pits instead of one. Sheeted wing leading edge and sheet tips look exact.

When I was a kid this was the school yard favorite color scheme. Aero Gloss of course....Ring  Masters or practically anything else. That is a well executed Chief!
