What is this?
« on: July 03, 2012, 02:19:39 PM »
Some years ago I salvaged this airframe at the total cleanout of our club's workshop.
I have no clue what it is. A .60 combat wing? Span 63", chord 14 3/16".
The engine mounts are left very long so they can be trimmed to size after finishing in order to put the CG where it's due.
I suspect it's an American design, so that's why I'm asking you guys.....

Pretty freaking elaborate for a combat ship.  And with a really thin wing.

And three lines?

I suspect it's a one-off by someone who's a bit of a "character".

The problem with electric is that once you get the smoke generator and sound system installed, the plane is too heavy.

Someone recently posted about the Jumbo.  It is about the same size of what you have there.

I'll try to find the posts.

Well if you guys are going to force me, I guess I will have to bring the Jumbo off the hook and take some pictures.   It looks nothing like the plane in the photos.  It has a six foot wing span with about a fifteen inch chord with 4 inch wide flaps.  Power is Fox .45.  It has been flown several times and you have to keep maneuvering it,  other wise the wing flutters and disappears until you give it elevator.  Doesn't happen if I can keep lap times down around 5.5 to 5.8 on 65 foot .018 lines.    I myself don't remember seeing anything like that in the picture. Well, Doc, you have one and I was just going by some of the features that "looked kinda like" the picture of the Jumbo I saw.

Aww, too bad.
I'm really hoping some of you guys that have one or even two decades more than I on your flying year's counter would recognize this thing.
Meanwhile it's eating up space in my workshop that I need, so if there's anyone wanting to finish it, come and pick it up, I won't keep it.
I'm asking because I don't want to be just trashing something of historical significance.

First glance I thought it kinda looks like a Pterodactyl.

Very interesting, I hope we find out where it came from but I would bet an experiment in the many uses of balsa.
