What a strange title for a new thread. But there was an article in AMA magazine a few years back on this very subject. Look, all of us C/L guys age getting older. Hardly anyone is becoming a new C/L modeler these days. Oh there is one here and there but by and large we have a 'dying' sport. At least it seems that way today. Now I just turned 65 two days ago and just found out today from the VA oncologist that I have an incurable cancer. It is treatable but the best we can hope for is to keep the monster at bay and hopefully I will still be able to go flying now and then. So I have a dozen planes RTF and that many kits and several new in the box .40 to .46 size engines not mention a box full of slightly used engines. Everyone I know has more of this stuff than I do. So now what to do with it all at some point in the future? Well we will just have to wait and see how I do on the Chemo pills. But as a personal challenge you need to think about the inevitable. What is going to happen to your stuff when you die?

Hi Jerry...
I hope the chemo works....
The Garden State Circle Burners have been the beneficiaries of kind donations from fliers and ex-members in recent years.
We hold a Swap Meet in November and almost all of this stuff gets scooped up....and the club benefits financially.
We all ought to instruct our wives/partners as to how we wish our air forces distributed....otherwise it's all liable to end up by the curb.
Again...heal up!

Jerry,
Sorry to hear about you illness. As to the "stuff" you can sell or give it to a club or other modelers or to a young person who might have interest.
Our prayers are with you buddy.
-
Ditto,
should set up ' STORE ' for teenagers to learn ( model ) aeronautics . but they probly want Space Ships ?? ( to get of the planet LL~)
SO , youd get them to pay for the stuff in Sweat , doing site work on fields and for ' oldies ' .Or theyed learn bad habits and want something
for nothing , like real estate agents and Lawyers.Or give away other peoples property like polititions.
If they put in the second weeks work labouring , youd know they might be worth giving some time to.
Set in up like a bog aeronautical ' Summer Camp '. . . " camp runamock " n~ ! ? oops.
Need a stauch non namby pamby motivator as leader.To issue orders . Now . When I say Jump , you say " how High " ! :## y1, HB~> ? . .. H^^ R%%%%

Hi Ty, Have you heard about eating cherries to help with gout? Hope this helps. H^^

Jerry, that is bad news, but, I know several people that were told they had incurable cancer. Some of them made it thru and I asked them how they did it. They told me they didn't worry about it and did what they wanted to when they could. It is really bad when you know they are younger. If you have a close friend to follow your wishes make a will to what is to be done. I will be 70 before the year is out. The doctors have been telling me I have and enlarged prostate. I have had a bad heart all my life. But why worry about it as the good LORD has my days numbered and I can't do nothing about it but enjoy life. I just pray every thing goes well for you.

A quote I heard a while ago:
"I hope that after my death my wife doesn't sell all my engines for what I told her I paid for them...."
Made me chuckle....

Man that sucks. Chemo hurts like Hell. I get another 9 month round starting soon and if it hits as hard as last time
there will be no flying or building...or anything. Just sitting around mostly dead but partly alive.
Sounds like your liver to me..?
Airplanes that I can't take with me HB~>
Scale R/C 30s race planes probably will wind up at the Museum in Patterson La.
Military R/C scale..guess I need to see if one of the Military Museums may want them.
The local full scale flying club displays donated Model airplanes in their club house so some will probably go there.
I guess the engines starting with my Great Gramps my youngest boy will keep.
My kids all can fly C/L and R/C and just don't so possibly they will keep some of the airplanes.
Or they can pile it all up and use it to cremate me.

Well if being in your mid 60s isn't enough to get you to thinking about eternity then a bad doctor's reports is. Actually I have thought a lot about eternity. I am a preacher of Jesus Christ and I know that my eternity is secured in Him. I buried my late wife of 40 years just 6 years ago. So death has been a part of my life for some time now. I am not afraid of dying but the thought of suffering is not too pleasant. But like Doc said; I intend to have as much fun and pleasure as my body will allow. Actually now the actions of Obama, Sarah, Rick Perry, (the governor of Texas that wants to sit in the White House, and a dozen more politicians mean nothing to me personally. It is a great comfort to know that the price of gasoline is not that important nor the other ills of society. And it is great to know that I probably will not out live my retirement savings. I milked my former employer for 7 years of their retirement money and now along with that I get SS. All in all it ain't that bad. From here on I am not worrying about much anymore and I am just going to enjoy flying, building, and talking with you other balsa heads on this and other forums.

Jerry,
Do not give up. Look into Proton Therapy. I had it two and a half years ago for Prostat cancer and all indications show I am cured. They do Proton Therapy for many kinds of cancer. Please go on-line and look into it. Do that before you start any other treatment. Some goes for you Doc.
Hmm as for our stuff? The only thing I can think of is to take the things you actually feel you will never get to use and take them to a contest. Put them on a table and don't try to get much money for them. They will go to someplace else besides your place.
Good Luck to you. God Bless you.

Having finished 10 weeks of radiation for prostate cancer I have something to say. I have been given two shots of Lupron. FRIENDS DON'T LET FRIENDS TAKE LUPRON. I would rather have the cancer than the side effects of Lupron. This is bad stuff. SLEEPY

The VA in Dallas have given me a capsule called Sutant. It is a fairly new pill that is suppose to stop the growth of the mass. It has many side effects. I am to take 28 of them then be off for 14 days then on again and off again. This will go on for the rest of my life. If this does not work then I will have to go to Dallas once a week for a chemo I-V. This stuff is incurable. I wonder how I got this disease anyway. I have not smoked a cigarette since 1968 and a pipe since 1975. Could be I got the microorganism some where. Anyway it is what it is. I am not going to concentrate on it but go have some fun and not stress out about life anymore. I appreciate Sleepy saying what he has said about his treatment. Let me encourage you that if you are a vet then take you DD 214 to your nearest VA clinic and get on their medical plan. It really is not that much different than private care and much more efficient than most private care. And it is all FREE plus you get respect on top of it all. Meanwhile back at the ranch we dream of fair skies and strong running engines in the over head 8s.

I applied for VA medical Bennie's two years ago when I had shingles and was turned down because I made too much money. They lied to me when I was released from active duty in 66. Just because you are a vet no longer means free medical.

A friend of my brother's got diagnosed with prostate cancer. The guy is a Mensa member (that's the HIGH IQ society, FYI). When I met him last October, he told me that he was going to Alkalize his system, that cancer can't live in an alkaline system. I thought it was an interesting concept, and thought about it...but there's almost nothing you can eat or drink that isn't acidic. I did see a book on the subject at the local healthfood store, but didn't bite. This Winter, I heard that he has his prostate frozen, to kill the cancer. I don't know how that works, or how it works out, but I've had lessions frozen on my arms and face, and that hurts enough that I can't imagine the pain of having my prostate frozen. I do know that my Mom took massive amounts of vitamin C (acidic) when she had colon cancer, and it didn't help her any.
Locally, our various clubs offer to help the family dispose of model airplane and related shop equipment, if family members aren't interested. Sadly, I've been to a lot of those for really good friends. I think the best way to do it is to put all the $ items out on tables with a suggested bid. Put the little stuff in a few "assortment boxes". The guys write down their offer and name. The highest offer at the end of the "silent auction" gets the item. Meanwhile, if you have surplus stuff and think you might not get to use that, sell it now, while somebody is still alive that would like to buy it. Best of luck to all y'all. H^^ Steve

It's been just 11 years for me. Its not so fun in the begining, good luck. My Girl freind did not make it, but before it was done she ask me to find someone to give her trap gun too. It was left handed and she wanted it to go to a girl, young girl if possible. So many people wanted to buy it, it was worth over a 1000 dollors. It took about 6 years but I found a new shooter that was left handed and a girl, but not young. It work out well she could not find a left handed gun. She could not believe I just wanted to give it to her, but it was not mine and Deb could not use the money.
I pray the you do well. If its not to be, find someone you can trust and help a new flyer get going. It does not have to be everything.

Be glad that you have the VA. My wife of 35 years and I never did that paper thing so she is not able to use the VA. This week, after a year and a half of operations, treatments, pain and suffering she was declared "CANCER FREE". She still gets a weekly treatment that only cost $1,600 each and that is a co-pay. I saw what she went through ... I do not think I could have. I am so proud of her. I will pray for you as I now pray for all Cancer victims.
I believe that we created cancer and turned it loose on the world in the chemicals made in our labs, so I will quote an old friend of mine, "We have met the enemy ... and he is us" Pogo

I had this black lady doctor last year at the VA, and she came in with gloves on and said: Ben Dover....drop yer drawers, I gotta check to see if you smugglin crack".... :o....I said, hold it doc, I'm John Stiles...Ben is out there in the waitin room! LL~

This year I get this white lady that looks like a hippy chick right outta Berkley Calif. She says...."so I hear you got a huge prostate...........better let me check it for ya." I said okay, Doc, but please use two fingers! She looked at me kinda weird and said....two?? And I said, "well, we might as well go ahead and get a second opinion while we're at it!" :##

We were reflectin on this very question the other day....lookin at a 40 acre used car lot called "Landers"! We wondered; if the world were to end, what would happen to all them vehicles lined up? Would they disappear, or be part of the landscape in some future dimension? LOL I figure my stuff will be in a yard sale a week after my carcass is out of sight. LL~ Hope ya get better Jerry, sometimes doctors make mistakes. Besides....old veterans generally don't die, but rather slowly fade away! H^^

Cancer is w/out a doubt the ugliest word I know - a terrible disease. Therefore to heck w/your stuff, how goes it w/your soul. I'm remided to give you john 3:16 and Joshua 1:9 and to tell you that I'll be praying for you on a daily basis. Nick

I'm not going into my medical problems (and there are some bad ones).
All my "stuff", planes, engines, etc. will go to our club for disposal at contests, or whatever....
GMA had his stuff auctioned off. That was just too sad for me. I'm sure the family needed the money. I don't need money, so it all goes for free.

Sometimes there are non medical things that work. Eight years ago I had my carroted arteries checked, and they found one was completely blocked, and the other was down to a pin hole. They did surgery on the good one, and I came out fine. I continued to get them checked every six months after surgery, and about a year later they found the one I had surgery on was about 50% blocked again. I went in for a cath, and they found it was blocked down by the aorta above my heart. To make a long story not quite so long, I had heard Dr. Isabel on Fox News talk about drinking pomegranet to clean out carroted arteries. I started drinking 8 ounces a day, and after about 5 years, my artery is clear. My surgeon had told me that nothing would clean them out except surgery.

Until somebody finds something that does something ..nothing can do it..or so they say...
Everyone of us is on a terminal trip and we are dieing from the moment we take our first breath.
But we as humans look past that and look to the future.
Nothing can kill us quicker than apathy.
We need to get our hoes up err opps hopes up and look at where we want to go and not worry about the how so much.
I am going to say something and do not yell at me....
If God is for us what can be against us ???
Yes I have my down days and with my mom and her Alzheimer's I have my moments...But I was raised roman C.
Some stuff I do not buy but there is a lot that I take from it.
Yes we can get sick...and while we all want to lay blame they are after all just tests and obstacles. We have to not dwell on the how or the why..just getting there....It is after all about the trip and how we deal with it.....some will die with out ever knowing the when others may well know the how and when...but after all every day is a gift....
Never forget to live in the moment. After all what more do we really have ?
I hope chemo works and you can enjoy flying building and everything for a long time to come. But do not dwell on the future when the present is after all where we are today.

Well, as has been rumored, I won't know. What's more, at the time, I won't care.
Seriously, I've been unloading stuff lately....and what little is left I would hope would go to various members of the local club, 'Cholla Choppers', to do with as they see fit.
-
Whatever is left after I've been able to disburse some of it can go to the dump after I'm gone. As if I would care at that point.

Jerry,
Serious question; serious answer. I am donating all my "stuff" to the Boy's Ranch program that Mike Gibson has been running for the past ten years. I have instructed my daughter to call Mike and have him come get it all. My kids/grandkids have no interest at all in building or flying, so I'm making sure it goes someplace that both wants it and can/will use it.
