Ty, I remember the adding machines. I worked in a drug store in high school and calculators had not yet arrived. The pharmacist used an adding machine to tally sales and expenses. And yes, no computers, no video games, so we built model planes.
Some years ago I would visit family, usually during the July 4 time frame, to attend the Fermi Lab contest outside of Chicago. My folks were still in the same house in northwest Indiana and there was a park nearby where I could put up some practice flights before the event.
One day some kids came riding up on bicycles. They were maybe 8 to 12 years old. One of them asked me where I got the plane. I told them I built it. One asked "How did you do that"? So, I told them what I did to build it.
One then asked, "You mean, we can't get one at Wal Mart"? I said no. He then said, "C'mon guys, let's go." Oh well, I guess that's how things are these days. If it is not already on the shelf, why bother?
