What engine is this?

Someone gave me this beast. New, never mounted or run.

Bore: .867, Stroke: .772, Displacement: .46, Weight: 13.9.

I'm pretty sure it's an Evolution but that's all I know.

What can you tell me about it?

Must be an early Evolution TPS Alpha Trainer Engine ... they came with a special three bladed prop on the Alpha 40 Trainer ..

If I remember the ones with the "a" on the castings is a .45  not a .46 and has a different bore / stroke than a .46. If you look up parts they show two different cylinder/piston sets for the two different engines.

 It Was sold as a combo with different airplanes they sold.

Judging by the weight Bob, I would say it came out of 1957 Case Tractor.

Somebody on here took an Evo .36 (similar) and machined all the fluff off.
Not a bad engine, really. "Quality" Chinese.
OS also made a trainer engine - OS .46 FXI

I have one. I converted it to C/L and have it in a Dreamer Bipe also converted to C/L. It has the power of a 60. It turns a MA 11-7 3 blade.

I've always been curious about the trainer prop. - 3 blade and low pitch. Has anyone tried it for Stunt?
I've seen them at the LHS.

I think Joe Gilbert tried one flight on an airplane of De's with an OS 40 4S and the 3 blade Evo prop and it would barely do a wingover. Not sure what happened to the prop but if it's still around I am sure it can be had pretty cheap.

Actually, from watching a plane fly with that prop(RC) it was designed to limit the top speed the prop could give.  For beginners in RC a plane get get pretty far away way faster than they can react.

Yes the supplied prop is for the beginners in RC.  It makes for a narrow speed range.  Need enough pitch to get air speed and will slow down for landings.  Some still don't believe that a prop at idle acts like an air brake.   It is also good for training on CL as the speed is not that great and the student doesn't get dizzy so fast.  It is made for beginners.   Remember the first time you flew a plane with a 10-6 prop and wondered was it was so fast unless you did it like I like to do,  set the needle rich just so the plane is fast enough to fly and also it doesn't fly as long.

That engine EVO/A also came on the early Hanger9 P-51 ARF's w/radio. I still have it .... hanging in the garage. It really came alive with a 2-blade and one of those canister Tower pipes.  Hundreds of flights on it .... excellent engine.
