I've been thinking of this for awhile now. For you guys with Bi-Slobs and/or go to Brodak, read on. In RC aerobatics, there is a class called freestyle, where you do anything you can with the airplane to music. What about doing the same thing with Bi-Slobs. I think it would be really cool and fun to see hat guys can come up with for a freestyle. the winner could be whoever gets the loudest applause for their freestyle.
I think a time limit would be neccesary, probably something around 4 minutes like in RC freestyle (I think it's 4 minutes), and you do whatever you want to to the music you have playing.
comments are appreciated, and what does everybody think of this for a new event.

I have seen the RC aerobatic freestyle events at the Nationals and it was AMAZING! It was probably the most fun I have had watching model airplanes. (The freestyle heli event is just as good).
I have talked about doing this in control line, but nothing has ever come of it. I would hope a team stunt event could happen at Brodaks in 2010, but there has only been 1 or 2 interested in that also. Change is hard in C/L and I think you would have to run the event for a year or two or three before it caught on, if it caught on. If John B. said go ahead with one of these events I would be flying in it!

I would definitely be flying in it if this were an event at Brodak. what about junkyard wars, when did that start and it seems like it caught on.
I would think the crowd could really get into this event as well.

This was done at Tulsa a few years back. They had people judging that new absolutely nothing about maneuvers (intentionally). It was a fun event.
I would rather see an "unknown" pattern for Experts and Advanced. The contestants are handed a sequence of maneuvers to study for a little while, and then perform them WITHOUT practice. We tried this a while back, but people were chicken. I still think it would work. Now that is a challenge!

Friends don't let friends fly Bi-Slobs... VD~

I have a Bi-Slob on the build table right now. I want in on the fun!!! LL~ n~ #^

We did that here. BI-SLOB fought it out. But my .60 sized slob crushed the other flyer..lol
HAD a great time
-
Will a BiSlob fly for 4 minutes??? S?P

I've never flown a Bi-Slob. Not my thing. Alas, it appears to be sort of cool, and even fun. What's not to like?
At the same time... The Applausometer method of declaring a 'winner' is not something I like. Awhile back, the loudest cheering went to a guy that had an airplane (an auto gyro, actually) that started coming apart and was ultimately landed without a crash. Hey, I was happy for the guy. Not everything came apart, and no one was in any real danger. But, the Applausometer deemed him the winner. Not very cool for the folks that took the event seriously, did well, and didn't have their untried airplane come apart or even lose a wheel or a muffler.
Caused a riff that exists to this day. Now, if there were some guidance as to how folks should scream and shout and throw in a few head slaps like they do on that NCIS show...
Just didn't like what I saw both during and afterward. But hey - that's me. I'd like to see a nice train wreck, but maybe I'd probably be better off if I didn't cheer it on. Then again, a Fox .35 powered train that could hover - that'd be sort of cool.

. . . and you do whatever you want to to the music you have playing. . . .
Good idea! C & W or Italian Opera (two sides of the same coin) would be great – done Karaoke style with the pilot carrying a mike.
Can you picture Dan Banjok belting out La Donna Mobile with the ‘slob in perfect time?
Applause meter off the scale!
(We older folks might do better with I ain't as good as I once was . . . )

Right now there is a question about Junkyard Wars events reference a thread concerning AMA Safety Code Rule, General #4 which says: "4. I will not fly my model aircraft in sanctioned events, air shows, or model demonstrations until it has been proven airworthy."
IMO, that is an illegal event and should not be pursued. Since the subject has come up in a thread where the AMA Safety Code Chairman has posted, perhaps he may address the subject. ???
As far as Brodak's event, I have never been there but hopefully I will next year. I have watched Pat Wilcox (CL Combat Contest Board Chairman) do a "free style" with a Bi-Slob. VERY INTERESTING! ~^

Having Danny do a freestyle with a Bi-Slob, I think would be insane. One thing would be how to get the music loud enough to hear over the engine, shouldn't be that hard.

Tulsa had a free style event the first year I attended. Most were flying Bi-Slobs. After first round Jim Lee and Marvin Denny(aka bigiron) wanted to fly again. I was the stooge for Jim and was told to vacate the area immediately. The Slob just did a half loop to invert almost without rolling. It was a blast watching the two of them loop, invert, stall/hang and figure eight inside of each other without any midairs or crashes. They got the biggest applause. I still don't remember who the individual winner was.
Now as far as the safety code for Brodaks Junk Yard Wars I imagine alot of checking before the planes were air borne. Also I beleive that was na unofficial event flown outside the official time for the other events. We have tried a variation on the event years before Brodak and never thought about the test flight before flying. We were using pizza boxes. DOC Holliday

Doc, I believe Jim was the winner ---his major "point getter" was lating down to fly his Slob--- in a sticker patch!!! I didn't have guts enough to do that.-- gladly ceded the win to him.

Forgot about the sand burrs. Still had some in my shoe soles two weeks later. When your hand heals you land Jim are going to have to do it again. Maybe at Brodaks. DOC Holliday

An interesting point, but not quite valid.
The rule says; PROVEN AIRWORTHY, not TEST-FLOWN.
The devices (one can hardly call them models) are proven airworthy by pull-testing, expert safety examination, and the use of wrist straps (sometimes called "thongs"). As written in The Code, they are flown in a roped-off enclosure, free of power lines.
ps: The Brodak already has more events than person can fly in four-and-a-half days. Without adding a day, new events could only be flown by passing up the existing ones.

Just for interest to answer Matt's question
" what about junkyard wars, when did that start "
I can remember back in the late 50's- early 60's when there were local clubs in our area. They did the junkyard war thing but back then they called it "orange crate" around here.

We in SoCal are still doing an "Orange Crate Race" once a year. The rules are such that the assembly is airworthy. To be fully compliant there needs to be a pull test.

Matt,
I like your idea, and I also like the idea of flying an unknown sequence in the advance and expert classes. I think this would be a great thing to spur new blood into the control line sport. I have been an RC pilot for the last 30 years, I have flown just about every type of RC there is and still enjoy it but i now enjoy control line for the challenge aspect and from the great people involved stand point. I found control line again and have been having a ball building, flying and competing. In my opinion, the one thing that control line is suffering from is stagnation. There are a lot of great ideas for new types of events, new patterns and ways to entice more people to join in this great facet of the sport. Look what 3D and electrics have done for RC. We need this type of innovation in this sport. I realize there is much tradition in play here, but things change, if we don't change with it, this sport will die.
Yes for a freestyle event
Yes for new pattern maneuvers
Yes for an unknown sequence
let's put some spice back into this sport
OK I'm off my soap box, but I have been thinking about this for a long time and wanted to put it out there

Years ago the Circle Burners had a free style bi slob deal....kinda fun....got folks that had never judged to judge.....just wrote down a "total" score...event was won by Ted Heinrichs, who had his a bit out of trim and he executed a perfect roll to the left and wound the lines up around the wings....
