Title: What brand of nylon or plastic 2" spinner fits up to nose ring like a?
Post by: Charles Carter on December 26, 2020, 10:33:48 PM
What brand of nylon or plastic 2" spinner fits up to nose ring like a typical aluminum spinner. I don't like the extra flashing that a dubro spinner has. Please no "Great Planes" with the aluminum backplate.

I don't know of any where the edge of the cone is lined up with the thrust washer - they are all offset, at least all of those I have seen.

Charles,
Gemfan spinners have the nylon backplate you are after but I'm not sure I would use them.

Your choice. Google, "Banggood". Only a couple of bucks each but I fear you are paying for what you get.

All the best

I have one already with no name on it.   I am just trying to obtain some more in different colors.

The usual workaround is a plywood disc thick enough to make up the difference.

Are you referring to the Dubro spinner?

Charles:

You might try one of these CF spinners.  They have a CF backplate.  Reasonable price.

Sig carried plastic spinners with flush backplates.  It looks like they still do but nothing in the 2 inch size on their website.  Good luck on the search.

Just a warning. ZYHOBBY have some good stuff, I have purchased from them in the past, but those carbon fibre spinners don't have an adapter with them. You have to find your own way of attaching the cone to the prop shaft!

Airborne Models (airborne-models.com) has 2" spinners with flat backplates in assorted colors. However, it appears that they all come with black backplates.

Charles

DuBro and Carl Goldberg, among others. Kavan, too, I think. All the plastic spinners I ever used had about the same thing, it had to be thin enough to fit on the shaft but thick enough somewhere to take the loads, so the drive washer is recessed.

Charles,
If you need to have the spinner edge be a certain dimension from the fuse ring one way with the Dubro snap togethers is to us a spacer washer between the engine drive washer and the spinner backplate. Make sure you rough up the washer surface so it doesn't slip. I like the electric plastic spinners with the bolt on flush backplate. These are ok if you don't use an electric starter. If you don't like the silver backplate ring just prime and paint the whole spinner/backplate.

SIG. Danny Dirt used to use those on some of his Slight Freaks and Impax.   H^^ Steve

I checked my stash of old spinners today and found a 2-1/2" Dubro with the flush backplate. It has two nuts recessed in the backplate for screws and is about 30 yrs old give or take. I don't know if they still sell this type but its definitely marked Dubro on the backplate.

Charles,

I might be able to print you one.  I printed some like this from ABS.  Some issues:

1. They are only for 3-blade props.

2. They fit snugly around the prop, so they'd be nicest if made for your specific prop.

3. I've never run one.  I gave one to Eliott, so you might first see if his disintegrated.

4. They are rough as printed, but finish up nicely.

5. They are blunter than what most people like.  I like them, though.

Other than the GP spinners with aluminum backplates, plastic spinners are typically much heavier than aluminum spinners from Randy Aero, Tru-Turn and Dave Brown. If you need the nose-weight, continue as you are. If you happen to need a 3-blade spinner, Mike Haverly has successfully joined an aluminum backplate from the GP spinner and a 3-blade DuBro cone. I'd be more thinking of making a new aluminum backplate for the DuBro cone. Epoxying and/or screwing the backplate to the prop driver is always a good idea, IMO.

The problem with plastic backplates is that they are so thick that you'll run out of threads on the crankshaft on many engines, plus they tend to kick the prop loose occasionally...almost always on official flights.

Regarding those CF spinners...both Tru-Turn and Dave Brown sell adapters that usually will work or are a good start. I have had to re-machine adapters and spinner cones to make them all behave together. Boring out the counterbore in the spinner cone of a Chinese aluminum (metric) spinner to fit an SAE socket head screw isn't so much fun. Probably even worse if it's CF. I think all the adapters made here take an SAE screw thread. It might be possible to rework one to use a smaller or metric screw with the use of a Helicoil or Keensert.    D>K Steve

Steve, call me a Globalist, but I have discovered that metric screws and even metric taps are available in the USA.

I use GP backplates for the FDM spinners I’ve been using for the last six years.  The GP backplate has six spokes. All you have to do for 3-bladers is to drill and tap four (two if you’re thrifty) spokes for M3 screws. Some day I’ll have a nose-heavy airplane, but for now the plastic spinners work a treat.

Globalist, that's pretty commonly known, and I have some of each. But when you have an adapter hecho en Estados Unidos Americanos and a spinner cone hecho en Chine, you gotta fall back on technology to joint 'em up. Like I wrote above, I don't believe Tru-Turn or Dave Brown make adapters that use a metric thread for the central attachment screw. I also didn't want to drive down to Screws R US to buy one SHMS.  D>K Steve

The red is Great Planes, white is HobbyKing.

Sig spinners used to have a flat backplate. Don't know if they still make them.
