What are ya goin' to build?
« on: October 13, 2009, 07:28:51 AM »
Since contest season is done for us after going to Palisades this past weekend, I was just wondering what everybody is going to build over the winter, or rebuild over the winter.

Many of you know I'm building an Oriental Plus and a Cobra.  Maybe I'll get to my Brodak P-40 that I won here (may power it with electric  :o )

Grandpa is refinishing one of his P-51s, needs to finish a P-51 that has been in bare bones forever, finish refinishing his 96 Nats plane he calls the Starfire but has no relation to Randy Smith's Starfire.  Oh AND he is going to refinish his F-14 Tomcat.  Edit: He also has a ARF P-40 de-ARF'ed and tossing around the idea of powering it with electric  :o AND he needs to finish repairing/rebuiding/refinishing his Big Job after a line broke.

That's our winter, what's everybody else going to do???

Edited for more projects I forgot about

Sounds like the Herdman/Colan team has a full plate.

Me too!  Aside from kits, and building for some customers, here is what is in the works.

Finish an OTS airplane in honor of John Miske.
Strip and refinish the "Sea Vixen".
Finish a new "Top HAT" that has been covered and collecting dust for about 3 years.
Work on a new design PAMPA airplane for myself. (Classified)
Complete work on Wayne Willey's "L'il Diablo" for kitting
Complete design and build of a "new concept"  airplane (Classified)
Hint: The "Hobo" is coming!

Hmmm...well...I have a scratch built Dolphin/FP-25 on the paint stand and a RSM LA Heat waiting finish with
a pair of Brodak .40's right behind that.  A Tom Dixon supplied Cardinal framed up for B-40 needing covering
and finish plus an Umland/Sterling Spitfire that I really want to build and fly in classic so that should pretty
much cover anytime I have between now and next years flying season...KOI is only three months away too.

Paint a Brodak Hurricane that I had Ronnie Thompson build , cover and paint a Brodak ARC Smoothie. Start and finish one SV-11 kit and one SV-22 scratch built Nats plane.  Mount a motor in a SV-22 that I bought from Ronnie for a practice plane. Practice, practice, practice.

I only have two things to do.....
1.  Finish my Vector 40
2.  Finish my Hutchinson F6F Hellcat that is about half framed.
If I can get my fat (ahem) into the shop and keep it there, I shouldn't have any trouble completeing them.  Everyone have a wonderful winter.

ps....we got our first snow a week ago! HB~>

Finishing a Cavalier with a RO-Jett 40 RE.   9 year old Tom Morris Quickbuild plane (kinda takes the "Quick"part out).  Lots of sentimental value in this one.

Building a Sultan with a PA 40 pipe.  Wings/stab are done.  I need to make the crutch and cut some wood.

Also have a Vampire for Brodak 25 if time permits.  This plane just looks fun.

It will be a slow winter, I think. The long term forecast is for (big surprise) rain. More than we've had in a decade. So I think I will get lots of shop time this winter.

Finish up my own design PA plane (currently in the finish process)
Build another Ringmaster Deluxe (this time with a better bellcrank)
Some sort of classic plane. I have several on the pile to consider including a Umland Colossus kit.

When all that's done, I have a new elliptical plane on the board that I would like to take a shot at.

Well first step was clean the shop.  That's done.
Second is finish Jester 2, that's not done but is in paper and dope with canopy attached.
Third, Finish bathroom in the basement for moments when you just gotta go but held off cuz building was going good.
Fouth a new classic ship, the Tucker is waaaay tired and needs to be replaced with something.  I"m thinking I beam stuff.

I'll be lucky to get Jester painted.....

Doesn't really matter what Mike builds, I'll end up drooling on it.

I need to finish the Tempest and then get going on a Legacy or Buccaneer. Haven't decided which yet.

I'm nearing the end of construction right now on a scratchbuilt 46" span full-fuse Curtiss Helldiver stunter for an FP .35. Just basically have to cut and fit the flaps, elevator and rudder, make up the landing gear doors, sand the cowl a bit more, and it's ready to start finishing.
Next up, I think I'm probably going to start on an original design .60 powered ship that I've had in my head for a couple years now and can't shake off. Either that or another scratchbuilt and designed .15 or .25 powered semi-scale WWII twin, or, or...  ;D

I am sure most of you know that I am building a couple take apart planes, they will be my first attempts at this type of building. One will be a Dreadnought and I am not sure on the second one yet.

Keep the topics coming Matt, You give everyone the chance to brag about their stuff! y1

Never undertake VAST projects with HALF-VAST plans.  However I would like to complete at least 2 of the following:

Mythbuster 2
Eclipse HV-650

Restore my 1974 "TriStar" Nostalgia-30

41st anniversary "Hawker Typhoon" Classic
44th Anniversary Big Art's "Canberra" Classic
46th Anniversary Arch's "Lympette" Classic

60th anniversary Big Art & Paul's  "Big Wing" for OTS

...and then the week after...!

Mike,
Good luck on refinishing your Falcon. I have to refinish mine, since the 15% fuel got under several areas.

Dennis,
One of the Adamisins had a stunter with a tandam landing gear at one of the St. Louis Team Trials. Do you have some info on that airplane?

I plan to finish up an Fox 35 powered All American and start on an Impact... most likely with PA65. I always agonize over paint schemes but as of today I am planning on a boxtop flag finish for the All American and probably borrow Paul Walkers' '92 WC color scheme for the Impact.

Got Starfire number 2 on the bench at the moment...moving at my usual glacial pace but the fuse is framed, blocks are shaped, just need hollowing, carved the tip blocks the other night and hollowed. Will put the wing in the fuse soon.  HB~> Also have one of Brad's T-Rex's to be a fun diversion once I get the new Starfire off the bench and into the paint stand. #^ Then I can build the T-Rex in between many boring coats of dope filler coats, etc.  LL~
