All those mentioned so far are good, but I'm more old fashioned and a traditionalist. I always find time to watch "It's a Wonderful Life", I have several versions of Dickens' "A Christmas Carol" on tape. There was a made for TV movie with Ed Asner in it called "The Gathering" that is quite good, and in recent years I've discovered another old movie called "The Bishop's Wife" with David Niven, Carey Grant and Loretta Young. I would like to find a copy of Mercy mission with Scott Bakula.
On Christmas Eve, we put out a bunch of food, and run " A Charlie brown Christmas", "The Grinch", "Rudolph", "Frosty" through the VCR and usually end up with "White Christmas" I have "A Christmas Story" on DVD, but since WTBS shows it for 24 hours straight, I try to catch at least the beginning where they show the department store windows with all the toys and check out all the model airplanes in the display. If you don't like that, you don't like corn bread!
   Merry Christmas to All!!!
And a Happy New year to come! H^^

White Christmas, Mitzi Gaynor Vera-Ellen and Rose Mary Clooney, no room for improvement beyond them.

I stand corrected.  You learn something new every day.

Mostly, I like the older, traditional, Christmas stories/movies.  I guess  Jean Shepard's "A Christmas Story" would make the top of my list.  Jimmy Stewart and "It's a "Wonderful Life" would be a close second.  George C. Scott as "Scrooge" in "A Christmas Carrol" is hard to beat.

"Ralphie" in "A Christmas Story" reminds me of my youth and it's trials and tribulations. I'm about the same vintage as that character (Ralphie) and I did, in fact, get a Red Ryder BB gun for Christmas when I was five years old, in 1949.

By the way, although she looked a great deal like Mitzi Gaynor, that wasn't her in "White Christmas." Her name is Vera-Ellen.

Merry Christmas to all,

Joe

I'm with the older stuff, which is more in line with what Christ tried to teach us. The stuff of trashin', slashin', and debauchery does not seem in line with that.  After all Christmas is about Christ.

>>George C. Scott as "Scrooge" in "A Christmas Carrol" is hard to beat.<<

Yea, that's my favorite, I'd have to say.

Just for Phil, I'll avoid Lethal Weapon this Christmas.   ;D

Happy Holidays to all.

Well, my lovely wife started a tradition many years ago of us watching Jimmy Stewart where he *saves* the Savings and Loan business, while defeating the *Evil* Mr. Potter.

There are a couple of other movies that we MUST watch each Christmas, but that one is the longest running one for us!

(BTW: if you want to stump me, just ask me Movie questions....... I have watched so few of them over my lifetime that I know very *little*!  Just like watching a "game", I just can't stop long enough at one time to do it! LOL!!)

Dan - Just saw one with Scott Bacula called "Papa's Angels" (I think).

Joe - Gonna shoot yer eye out kid!  ;D

Bill - That's one of my favorites too.

Didn't see anyone mention, "Miracle on 34th Street" (the old one).

Still, I think White Christmas tops my list.

You guys have a very Merry Christmas.

George

Our all time favorite is the musical version of "Scrouge" with Albert Feeney. As usual, my families reason is long, complicated and booring to most. The musical remains ever so true to the Dickens version, but the added singing/dancing numbers only bring out the terror, pathos and comedic love that some of the other versions cant or wont offer. Alex Giuness nearly steals the whole thing with his portrail of Morley. Give this one a try. It dosent get any better than this movie.

I have a little list:

Modern:
Santa Clause series
Nightmare before Christmas
The Grinch with Jim Carey

Older:
Miracle on 34th street, first version (2nd one isn't too bad, but doesn't really compare, as usual)

I must admit that I have never watched White Christmas.  I'll have to remedy that as Der Bingle is one of my favorite singers.

No one has mentioned "The Polar Express."  I've only seen the trailers but the story is truly heartwarming with a wonderful message.  The trailers can be viewed on You Tube.

National Lampoon's "Christmas Vacation" and "A Christmas Story".

In case you don't know, "A Christmas Story" is based on part of a book titled "In God We Trust, all others pay cash".  It's a fun book, and contains lots more than is used in the movie.

A couple for me. Holiday Inn -- the song "White Christmas" debuts here. Then Lemon Drop Kid with Bob Hope. "Silver Bells" is first heard in this one.

We watched "The Kingdom" yesterday at the In-laws. Not a bad movie, but not appropriate for Christmas Day, or for all the "chitlins" around... :X   Definitely not a "chick flick", but some surprisingly good acting, IMO.

I watched "Silent Night" the other night which is a story about a German widow in a farmhouse during WW2 taking in German and American soldiers during a storm on Christmas eve. It was entertaining until the end when they stated the war ended on Christmas Day, which is ridiculous.

"In case you don't know, "A Christmas Story" is based on part of a book titled "In God We Trust, all others pay cash".  It's a fun book, and contains lots more than is used in the movie.  Dave"

Good point Dave.  A great book, but don't try to buy one in hardbound unless you're prepared to spend big bucks.  A battered hardbound copy goes for over $100, and a fine condition 1st edition can go for $500 - $1000!  Dang ... I should have bought a copy before the movie got so popular.  It's definitely one of my favorites.

Yes Dan, I watch for the model airplanes in the window too, and then get nostalgic and wish that model airplanes still had that kind of mainstream popularity -- that they would warrant display in a department store window.  It was true at that time.  Nearly every boy in America wanted a model airplane back then.  Even the department store window itself has become a piece of nostalgia.  Walmart doesn't have a window.  We really do live in a vastly different world now, don't we.

Some of you have mentioned movies staring Jimmy Stewart.
I read on another forum a comment on a new book to read, "Jimmy Stewart, Bomber Pilot" by Starr Smith.  I recommend it to all modelers.  Jimmy Stewart left a $1000 per week acting job and enlisted as a private in the Army Air Corps at $21 per month in the spring of 1941.  5 years later he returned to the States as a full Col. He then served in the Air Force Reserves and retired in 1968 as a B. Gen.

Starr Smith served with Jimmy Stewart in the 8th Air Force in England.

A great read.

Clancy
