I'm almost ready to start painting a scratchbuilt prototype .40 size version of Keith Sandberg's original "Challenger" design.

I'm calling this one "Challenger 575", 50" wingspan, 575 square inches...

New Electric.  It's actually a little further along than this photo but it's still on the bench.

650 sq in Bear wing, extended fuselage, Electra flyte 25, Castle Phoenix 45 ESC, Hyperion 4s 4000ma Lipos, FM-9 Timer.

The absence of -- in some places -- about five years accumulation of junk.  It's been overdue for a cleaning.

And a Banshee that Randy Powell gave me, that is getting flaps installed for the first time and then the wings re-covered.

And hanging over the workbench is a Fancherized Twister-in-progress: I need to start the finish.
AMA 64232

The problem with electric is that once you get the smoke generator and sound system installed, the plane is too heavy.

One more time. Fifth time is the charm. The olive drab plane sitting on the table is waiting for nose art graphics. The engine was run for the first time yesterday. The Yak-9 is ready for OTS and the Guru is ready for PA. The first two are Brodak kits and the Guru is scratch built using a Cardinal wing kit from Brodak.
I may be wrong but I doubt it.

The Honey Bee is last years back-up plane that I used at Wrentham, MA. It was too ugly so I re built it and prettied it up a bit. It was orange wing and tail with a blue fuselage. Blue Lustre Kote tha was rapidly turning black from the sun. LA .46.

Thanks Mike!
My choice of engines are those Blue OS LA .46.  ;D

This is a very cool plane and glad you approve. It's all Pollyspan and Silkspan. I hope to come in around 45+-oz.
It will not be a front row plane but I'm going to try and make it shine with Brodak dope.

Hopefully before the weekend I'll have the bench cleared of tools from hanging cabinets, and on the way to building three balsa ribbed Skyrays, powered by os 25s. I also have a Brodak Submarine Spitfire I put on hold until my finishing skills are a little better.

I've just got run of the mill sport stuff. At the moment.

A "Flite Streak" I started in 2012.

I have the "New American." The first model I totally designed in CAD and had laser cut. Started that in 2012.

"The International." Actually built the wing, modified Ares wing, in the early 60's. I designed in CAD, a fuselage and tail feathers for that wing.

Oh! I almost forget. "The LOSER." This odd ball build and model started out as one model and is now something entirely different. Started this in 2012.

The LOSER will get finished first. Then I'll flip a coin.

Hope to get everything completed within the next half year. I have much better stuff and more interesting stuff on the board.

It will have to wait a couple of weeks, I'm up to my neck in King Orange International preparations. when I'm not engineering F/A-18E F & G models for my everyday job.

Maybe you could give me some of your set up info on the twin electric set up Randy.

Hi Mike Pratt-

It's good to hear from you! I've kept all your helpful hints. I hope you won't mind..., but my P-Force encountered the ground once too often, and I'm using its wing in a different, model that I hope I'll build lighter - we'll see about that. The break shown was only one of several diagonal ones. New fuselage and tail are coming along slowly, but it should get into the air this spring. I added some stub ribs and have down-sized to the LA-.25. Fuselage needs nose tripler and contouring. Picture just shows wing fitting.

I also got a built-up winged "Magnum" for my LA-.46 (enough engine?) from a clubmate. I like it.

I was wondering if anyone would pick up on that.

It is a ARC. And here is how. I was looking to build a new profile plane for next year. My good flying buddy Zuriel was building this plane (I think last year... Remember he is a slow builder). For a few reasons he lost interest in completing it and passed it off to me. It is all hand cut and I only had to replace a few broken parts, build a lead out guide, tip weight box and start doping it.

Good catch Steve.  LL~

PS - notice the green plane in the video on the monitor Steve?

If careful I can walk into my shop without falling on my face tripping over something. Even make it to the chair by the bench. Comfy. What do you do. I keep throwing things out and improving the order. I think working on one thing at a time might help. At the moment I've three models going. A Tanager (which might turn out to be an Accenter), a Sterling P51 knock off and a Brown B2 stunt war wagon. A lovely plane designed by a friend. The knock off Sterling plane was manufactured (hand cut?) maybe 20 years ago, maybe 30 years ago. The box is brown, speckled, crackles when touched. This kit was made by AJ Free Flight service. Ever hear of them? Buy anything of theirs you find. All the wood in toto, ribs, sheeting, fues, flying surfaces, weighs 5.8 ounces. Lots of C grain. Where it matters. I'm planning on putting together a few small little airplanes in my dorm.  I'm also thinking of drawing up plans for something and scratch building it.

1) 1938 HLG design by Joe Hervat called...The Hervat.  21" wingspan for OT HLG.  Dad's got a newspaper article of me chucking one of these when I was 4.

2) My own design and "secret weapon" for next summer (Dan Berry if youre reading this, imma getcha!!)  Took plans for the 1948 Jetco "Thermic 20" and blew them up 200% for a wingspan of 36".  Modern airfoil and polyhedral wing construction.  Resized the stab and rudder to accomidate the popular and easy to trim "arrow feather" tail.  Fuselage is a popup boom-style fuse, which accomidates a Bauer Remote Dethermalizer servo, receiver and battery.  Flies and thermals really well in spite of its weight, a rather heft 135g.  Subsequent versons will have more span (1m, or 39" limit per AMA rules) less ply and more C-grain balsa in the nose to reduce the weight.  With RDT the days of lawn-darts are pretty much over, so I dont need to build tanks with wings anymore.

Tom "Tommy T" Peadon is also working on a very interesting and promising DLG design that I might play with.  Looking at the model head on, the right wing has DIHEADRAL and the left a POLYHEADRAL wing.  The mean span, or straight line distance from the wingtip to the center, is equal.  However the absolute span is not, and the polyhedral side is a bit longer and has more area.  The idea is this asymetric lifting power helps prevent spin-ins when in high-lift, high-turbulant flight.  I wish I had a picture of one.  Looks super funky--first time I saw it fly I thought he had broke something on launch, but it flies great, the math is sound, and Tommy T forgot more about FF than I'll ever know so ill give it a try!

future plans

2x of each of these.

3x Don Deloach's "Elipsix" CAT Gliders

An E-pearl 280 for the new E-36 category (yes electrics are invading FF too!!)

And some Rubber Scale models.  I've been bitten by the scale bug recently so im gonna copy a Gillows Super Cup kit a few time for some practice before starting on something more higher-end.

Sadly, nothing to contribute, but really enjoying seeing what others have on the bench! I'm trying to get enthused about a profile Road Runner kit, but my "design yer own" and "scratch build it" leanings holds me back nearly as much as my "need to work more than play" life! Great to see some nice building and design work coming from you guys. Cant say enough about Chris Cox's take apart pics! H^^. I'm there is spirit and lurking a couple times a week fellas! I do however have a nice layout of a semi-scale Laird Turner Meteor in pencil held in reserve for sometime before age 60 LL~ ... a return to serious stunt endeavors! Lets just say it was originally intended to be powered by a Saito 72 if that helps date the last time I seriously put pencil to paper....but I suspect it will b easily converted to "electrickery" as Howard puts it.

Jim Hoffman calls me almost weekly during flying weather (which is now in the SW) and graciously allows me to ring out one of his stable. n~ Helps keep the fire lit when its not possible to keep it fully stoked. ;)

I like that Inception.  I hope the wing is as cool as the fuselage.

Me, I got Jerkline Special plans today, but I plan to whip out a take-apart stunter acceptable to airlines first.
