Title: What's a "swivel"?
Post by: steven yampolsky on June 23, 2014, 03:58:43 PM: I was doing the most exciting thing ever: reading general section of CL rules. HB~>

While reading through section 5, I hit on this sentence: "No swivels are to be used as part of the control system of Control Line models". Can someone educate me on what a swivel is? Sounds like some kind of animal. Do we prohibit animal sacrifice? LL~

But seriously, what's a swivel?

Post by: Steve Helmick on June 23, 2014, 05:32:33 PM: I'm not saying you should use swivels...far from it. But here's some data on the "Crane Swivels" I use for a few methods of bass fishing. Interestingly, Crane Swivels are just about double the strength of a "Barrel Swivel". I've got no clue why that is, if it's material or different design. Since they're twice as strong and the same price, I fail to understand why anybody would buy barrel swivels, nor why they would manufacture them. FWIW, I use the #12 for "Dropshotting" and the #5 for "Carolina Rigging".

From the rulebook's ban on swivels, I guess any of the clips are ok if you take them off the swivel and they pass the pull test? Ewwww... :o Steve

I was born a city slicker and grew up a yuppie! H^^

Now where is my grande hot decaf triple vanilla non-fat soy no foam extra hot extra caramel upside down machiatto? LL~

Yes, they will pass pull for 1/2a if you use a properly sized item. I know they will pass heavier loads, but the large sizes are meant for terminating tackle, not lowest drag...I have never used them on larger than 1/2a for that reason alone. I also know that a shock load may straighten the snap.

Best to use snap swivels for fishing like they are intended.

If you ever pass through OKC give me a shout! We will throw some fishing poles in the back of my 72 Dodge pickup. It only gets 12mpg and burns oil so we will have to stop at a gas station on the way to the fishing hole. Probably just as well as they sell great black coffee!

Just pulling your leg of course... I hope you got your answer about the swivels. I used to use them for 1/2A without issue, but wouldn't even consider them for anything larger.

One year, I won half of the "big fish kitties", and another guy won the others. He and I talked about that, and decided that we just did what we always did when "gone fishing", which is just trying to catch the biggest fish we could, not numbers of fish. I usually finished in the middle of the pack, sometimes with a limit (5), and sometimes placed 2nd or 3rd, but never 1st. Entry fees were about the same as a typical stunt contest, but entry $ was part of the prize...maybe a couple hundred bucks. Big Fish kitty would be $50 or more, depending on how many joined into that.

One of the pictures shows me alone in my boat, but lately I've been fishing out of my buddy's boat. I drove to Livingston, TN to pickup that boat for him, when his colonoscopy went badly. We had planned to go get it together and fish our way back home, but he had to start radiation. At least, I got to pick my route, which was mostly pretty fun. And many thanks to Gordan Delaney for putting me up for two nights enroute home. My fishing buddy can fly CL and FF, and I'm trying to get him interested in flying CL again.

I think Ward Van Duzer and Mike Griffen also have bass tournament history. Anybody else? #^ Steve

Stop fishing where there are a lot of turtles...they steal bait from anything! Their mouths are too hard to penetrate with a hook.
