One more added to the bucket list

I hope I live long enough to complete my bucket list of models to build.  Had to add this one today.

That is Charlie Reeves King Cobra.  I do not think he ever had plans published.  However, Tom Dixon has listed plans for this one.

Allen Brickhaus did a nice profile with that same paint job, Model Airplane News, June 1978.  Vince Micchia also did one in Flying Models, May 69, but this one was for "slow combat" with fixed flaps, and was the basis for a Midwest kit.

I consider Charlie a good friend and a great builder. The Humbler he built last year got a few pilot's choice awards along with a few top three in Classic.

Mike you have great taste in planes. It's on my build list as well.

The Flying Red Horse is still flying in profile scale.  It was and now is powered by an Aldrich tall case Fox 40.  That model was my first major publication and the payment paid the closing costs on our house in 1978.

  Hey guys,
I have to agree with the Mikes, there's nothing wrong with multiple models going at one time. There have been so many times that I have been involved in a building project and I seem to have come to mental block. So what I do is shelve it and move into one of my other projects temporarily. Sometimes, I'll go off the grid, and delve back into my free flight. It just kind of clears my head abit. Then I get frustrated with my free flight and I go back to my control line. It's a vicious cycle, but it sure beats the heck out of going to work.

Hi Mike,

It has been many years since I built a model without a few more being in the process.  If I only have one going, if I lose interest temporarily, I don't have anything else to work on...... ;D

Bart,

I do not know for sure about the design/build dates for the Reeves P-63.  I do know that he had it at a contest in Lexington, KY in 1972.  I also know that he was flying one of his Sharks at the 68 Nats and I think he used a Shark at the 69 Nats.  So, I would think that His King Cobra came in the early 70's.  Maybe I can find out.

Per Keith's comment, here's a group shot of semi scale stunter's from Lexington-1972.  My sometimes reliable memory is that Charlie's P-63 was new that year...

According to Charlie it is Classic legal.  Robert Compton flew one, but in reverse colors at the VSC in 2011, I think the year is correct.

Charlie sent me this e mail this morning... sure he won't mind me sharing it with you guys.

Hey Mike,

I drew the plans for the King Cobra in the summer of 1967.

I just ran across a photo that I took of the stunt finals scoreboard at the 1970 Nats in Chicago.  That is where I flew the P-63 Kingcobra without the red trim decals.  It was just black and white then. Later I got some more info on the Flying Red Horse and got some decals made of the Mobil Gas shield, the flying red horse, and the name, put them on the plane and flew it at the Lexington contest in 1972 where we got the picture made of all the semi-scale stunt planes lined up.

1 - Lampione         598
2 - Rabe         594
3 - Phelps         587
4 - Kostecky      548   580
5 - Silhavy      529   580
6 - Werwage         572
7 - Gierke         565
8 - Bambrick         564
9 - Gieseke         563
10 - Reeves         562
11 - McFarland      548
12 - Baron         520

Maybe this will help.

Just curious what planes do you have on your "Bucket List"?  I have about 50 kids in my collections and i doubt I will ever build them all but sure is nice to have a choice.  Someday I will narrow it down to an actual Bucket List and get started.
Right now I am building a Nobler and it is coming along ever so slowly.

Hi Jay

Guess the easiest way to answer that is to just list them.  They are not in any particular order yet.

1.. Jean Pailet's - Skylark
2.  Ted Fancher's - Imitation
3.  Larry Cunningham's - Mo Best
4.  A Biplane (do not know which one yet)
5.  Big Jim Greenaway's - Pattern Master
6.  Charlie Reeve's -  P-63 King Cobra
7.  Bob Palmers - Skyscraper
8.  Don Hutchinson's - Douglas Dauntless
9.  Don Hutchinson's - Piper Cub
10. F77 Tigercat

Guess those are on my top ten list right now which is subject to change.  I am 65 now .. If I built all of these I figure I would be 75 when I finished.   :P :-[ :P :-[ :'( :'(

Alan's profile P63 in post #25 is a textbook example of Profile execution. Note the nose tripler, fairing into the gracefully rounded fuse, then the airscoop; Panel lines are definitive, making the airplane truly scale like.

Now I want to build a P63. (after my Kenhi Mustang!)  This plane is 'seductive'... >:D

I told my plans's story in the thread I started at the Nostagia30 board...

Bob Hunt is currently cutting them for me, with a few "extras", like capped spars, moulded LE, foam flaps...
That model is a thing of beauty!!
