Sun Protection

I've been wearing a "Buff" lately when out flying and fishing. This weekend, at the fabulous Western Canada Stunt Championships, I was asked several times about it. I thought it might help educate y'all about a way to avoid excessive sun exposure...we all hate to put on sunscreen, and it's horrible when it runs into your eyes. I never like to put it on, except once in the morning. I've had 3 skin cancer surgeries, two basal cell carcinomas and one melanoma. A melanoma is serious business, and not to be ignored.

I wear a boonie hat that keeps my forehead and ears covered. Sunscreen from the cheekbones down.
Aerosol sunscreen is a wonderful invention.

                 Over the past 2 years, I have had lots of issues at the dermatologist. In fact, I rarely can count on a simple visit anymore on my closely scheduled visits. I would like to add that Adam's sunblock headwear works very well for head, neck and ear protection. Ken

My fiancé is very fair skinned and susceptible to sunburn.

She deals with a company called Solumbra and they have a huge collection of sun modulating clothing and accessories for both men and women.

I went to the Safishing.com site and they do make a (creepy) clown face one, red nose and all.  I don't know Howard (Rush), so I could only wonder about the couple of clown references I have read here on Stunt Hangar.  Then I saw a picture in an old magazine where he was competing in a full clown suit!  As Spock used to say, "Interesting".  Now I understand the what, just not the why?

My brother had a super Fox hat with flaps that hung down.  It too was, uh, interesting.

I imagine a big stick-on red nose would work better than the glob of sunblock goop you sometimes see.  Maybe Shug could fill us in on the finer aspects of the noble clown nose?

I use Columbia brand long sleeve fishing shirts, booney hats, and pants that all have a 25 to 50 sun protection rating. Then I only need sunscreen on my hands, neck, and ears. After having 15 squamous cell skin cancers and numerous basal cells, I wear this gear whenever I am going to be in the sun for more than 5-10 minutes. Four of the squamous cancers on my scalp were "dug" out to the skull which required skin grafts to close. No fun!

This is a good warning thread that needs to be brought up every now and then.

Some medications make us more susceptible to sun exposure so check any meds also.

I guess I have been lucky.  I've always worn long sleeve work shirts, broad brimmed hats and heavy jeans with work boots.  In my younger days,  Mother and Grandma used to make sun bonnets.   But now women want to be a toasty brown.

This past winter I had to see 3 different Dermatologists. I had 7 procedures, (even the Blue Light Therapy),  done on my face, neck and bald head. Anyway I was told if I keep going out into the sun light to use a sunscreen with Mexoryl. At the time The FDA has not approved it. Now I see where the FDA has approved it.  So this past winter I had to go the Canada for a bottle of it (Ebay). It is not cheap.

Same product, seemed like fewer options, but also a couple that the SA website doesn't carry, IIRC. Might be the same company with a different website for different product image/market. Same 80% discount with a different code.

There are some brands on Tackle Warehouse that have breathing vents to reduce/eliminate fogging glasses, a huge plus. I cut a hole for my nose/mouth in one of mine, but it's not a perfect solution. I'm still searching for an ideal solution. Inhaling is easy, but exhaling causes glasses to fog.

I bought my "Buckeye Lures" long sleeve T-shirts from Tackle Warehouse (have two). Nice shirt, good price, and I was born in Osborn, Ohio, so I guess I'm a "Buckeye" by birth.  Steve
