Title: Were to buy the best masking tape ??
Post by: Leester on March 20, 2015, 12:19:16 PM
I have gone to Menards and Lowes and bought the cheap 1" masking tape for various uses and usually the stuff is JUNK !! It sticks to were you can't peel it off the roll or it has no adhesive at all. I don't need the high priced Scotch or Gorilla tape, just a decent priced tape that works. Were is the best for the money tape at ?? Brand name ??

When I think "decent priced tape that works" I think 3M.  Perhaps you're just being too much of a tightwad?

My local Home Despot sells bulk packs of 3M blue tape for a fairly good price.  I don't use it for actual masking (I use the green stuff for that), but It's great for all those jobs where you need a tape with a reliable amount of stickiness that'll reliably come off when you're done.

I use the green tape from auto paint suppliers. Only use the blue stuff to hold stuff.
Also get the blue plastic tape to do curves.

Here it is.  http://www.lowes.com/pd_87237-98-2093EL-SR-48T_0__?productId=50053409

Before you scoff, one of the best painters I know uses it pretty much exclusively, Pete Peterson.  Don't just peel it off and use it.  Peel off what you need and lay it on a cutting surface, and use a razor and a straight edge to make a mask that will give you a clean line every time.  Glass even works better but dulls the razor quickly.  I have a vinyl cutter but still use this for long lines or touch ups.  Make sure it says "Safe Release".  It works, REALLY.

Cheap, frugal, or whatever, I don't like spending money on more expensive tape when this works well.

Try the yellow (delicate surface) Frog tape.  You will be happy.

I have grown to really like yellow Frogtape. y1

We need different tapes for different uses in our hobby. I've got at least a dozen various types for whatever task is at hand at any given time. Also, I've found that when it comes to tape you really do get what you pay for. I'd rather spend just a little more for something that works in confidence that deal with the headaches of something that doesn't, especially when painting.

My local Home Despot

If I started referring to my 'home despot', my wife would probably take it the wrong way and become displeased.   ;)
