Title: Weight of landing gear ?
Post by: Ironbomb on March 12, 2006, 10:24:23 AM
I cut from sheet aluminum a set of gear for my profile Cardinal project.  I have some .080 on hand here, and thats what I wanted to use. After cutting, shaping blending, and polishing, each piece weighs .85oz. I get 1.9oz on my scale when they are both placed at the same time.

What I want to know, is this (1.9oz) a normal weight for the gear, minus wheels and pants? Total weight of all components is 4.1oz. I am not happy I just added 4oz to the weight of my plane. >:(

What does profile carbon fiber gear weigh?

Anyone have a weight for the Aluminum gear from Brodak that comes with the kit?

Note, My gear is of the same dimesions that is on my ARF cardinal, roughly 3/4 x x 1/2 x 7.

greg, ican't tell you about the gear weight thing one way or another. do you have a set you've been flying with that you can compare.

BTW--i couldn't help but smote you.

The kit gear is wire and it's 3/4 oz. My scale only does 1/4 oz increments and 1 is 1/4 but both together is 3/4 so that should be pretty close.

I am a dummie sometimes.  :P  I could have removed the gear from my ARF, and weighed that. I dont know why I didnt think of it before  ??? , Thanks Leester.

My Arf does not have the wire gear, its the dural. I dont know what alloy aluminum I have here, but it was a bitch to bend. I almost saved it for the brake at work. but its done now. I'll post the comparison weights in the morning.

Good night

Wow, that huge! Thats over half of what my aluminum gear weighs. Thanks Dennis

My stock Brodak gear weighs almost 5oz. My gear I made now weighs 3.5oz unfinished.  I hollowed out the pants alot last night. got back a bit more than 1/2oz. That and what my stock stuff weighs makes me happier  :)

here is the landing  gear.....

Greg

anyone remember the Bob Newhart show, Bobs neighbor, Howard I think, was a pilot, he had a poem that has stuck with me for about these last 25 or 30 years......

Landing Gear,

Landing Gear,

Langing Gear,

have a beer, shut the door.

Does anyone else remember that? :D

Greg,
The CF gear is 7/10ths of an oz. for the pair.  Less than one oz.  Don't know what that computes to with wheels and pants.
What does the pair of aluminum gear weight by themselves?

I was wondering what I was missing in Ironbombs reply.I now see Bill.I guess I should have wrote 7/10th of and ounce rather than .7oz.Thanks Bill.

I had to go back and look again, the old eyes see just fine from 3 feet away! hahahaha

Dennis is too picky.  To me what is the difference if every one knows that carbon fiber gear is .7 ounce or 7 tenths of an ounce.  I know carbon is lighter, but, cost is about ten times what I would pay for a pre-finished gear set from RSM.  I still say an airplane can be too light at times.  Like when a normal contest in our part of the country may have wind starting at 5 and going to 20+ by flying time.  DOC Holliday

Well, I put a single gear on the scale, .9oz. And the pair come in at 1.8oz. So almost an ounce each to get the plane off and back on to the ground without scuffing the belly.

I checked out the Mike Pratt site. His carbon gear are a huge weight saving. I dont know when I would order such a set. I was shooting for the low 40's with this plane. I dont think I'll make it. I put every piece of equipment on the scale that would be carried by the plane, and it hit 37oz, unfinished. So if I can do a 11oz finish, it will weigh as much as my ARF Cardinal.  :-\  not what I wanted.

More pics later
