WC Biplane and Other Notable Airplanes
« on: August 19, 2022, 07:41:45 AM »
I’ve been itching to ask the world team about the red biplane

Now that you are home and have hopefully caught your breath, can anyone share some details?

We’re there any other unusual airplanes worth discussing?

Thank you,

Bruce

It flew really well.  It flew like a stunt plane, not like a Bi-Slob.  Wings have pretty narrow chord.

It’s a model of Kravcik/CZE. He used it in the pre champs world cup contest, and placed 3. after Orestes and Igor, I think. But in the world champs he flew his normal model, to 2nd place.
It’s s cool model that seems to fly surprisingly well. L

You got it Howard.  Bi-planes of any size usually requre a generous spacing between the wings- at least one chord length, and a bit more won't hurt.

I'
m curious, why does there need to be such a big spacing between wings?

Airflow over one wing interferes with airflow over the other wing, if they are near each other. Separation by at least the length of wing chord has been a rule of thumb to minimize this.
I built a Blue Pants as a kid. Wish I still had it. Might even learn to fly it.

As someone who spent MONTHS with some of the brighter  minds on the biplane theory, the explanation of wing interaction is not as straightforward as it seems.

Part of the issue ( ONE OF THE MAIN issues ) is you need separation to allow to airflow during manouvers. There is a specific minimum number to allow for "somewhat" tight manovers and this example seems to fit in exactly what we came up with.

Although if I had my time over again I wouldn't cant the top wing forward like this ( and mine ) for a few reasons.. mainly inside / outside variations..

The narrow chord is needed for 2 main reasons.. .

1.. the overall lift needed is still a know equation.. approx 2" of total root chord for lift and drag, having 2 wings just means you need to half it.. so 2 x 1" approx...

2.. drag reduction..

I wouldn't recommend a bipe to anyone who doesn't want a massive headache....  I Honestly found no significant improvements.. the extra drag it generates needs alot of power to overcome.

I started with a PA75 and then retrofitted it to Igor electric and although the latter was ALOT better it didnt show any serious improvements..

I also had a walker style flap adjustments on all 4 flaps.. one thing that surprised me was the amount of flap travel needed was HALF of a normal ship.. go figure..

I applaude whoever decided to attempt this red one..
Control system was a tough one to crack.. this one cheated with a bar attaching both flaps.. mine had all indepentantly adjustable systems.. you really need to be able to dial in T1 vs T2..  I virtually had to rewrite my trim book to handle inside outside..

But like twins are nice a 4 engine version isn't better lol..
2 wings isn't better than 1 ..

justin case someones figering on Doig One , theres a few ' Guideline type  ' putt putt's ' as opposed to rip snorting terrors .

BE2C/ 12.

Bréguet 14. pretty simple  solid .

Zero stagger plus a all flying Tailplane , which could be usefull , on a Biplane ? Salmson 2 , 7 in U.S. service , for patriots .

And a de h 60 G III Moth , a ' straight wing tiger moth ' & theres zillions of Tiger Plans , Good thrust line / stagger cetera , & hopefully LIGHT .. Being a de Havillland . for semi scale buffs .

luciano Compostella got the Euro Champs with one , so they cant be totally impossable . theres video somewhere of it doing its thing ?

Douglas DT - 2 , looks like it would ' convert ' to stunt , if  your looking for a flash paint job .

Sans floats perhaps . Some are flatter aft top fuse - some rounded upward .

I actually designed a Ringmaster Bipe around 2008. Bill Gruby built it, but I’m not sure if it ever flew. With 650 squares, setup for a ST60 or equivalent. Seems that I also did a 46 sized version, too. I’d need to look at my files. If anyone is interested, I can attach the PDF files for easy viewing.

I think someone on here had a photo of a Bipe they built using 2 Ringmaster Jr. wings on an S-1 fuselage and tail.

Check out Peter Miller's Cavalier Mk. 4 in Outerzone - a very good, straightforward aerobatic C/L biplane.

Talk about OLD ;

You could build it as a Helicoptor too . Just in case it didnt work as an aeroplane .

On June 16, 1922 – 100 years ago today, Henry Berliner demonstrated a prototype helicopter to the U.S. Navy’s Bureau of Aeronautics in College Park, Maryland.

https://www.freightwaves.com/news/freightwaves-classicspioneers-berliner-built-earliest-version-of-the-helicopter

These ones mustve done really good square corners .
