Title: Warren Walker breaks plane ... and arm!
Post by: Larry Renger on June 01, 2009, 11:30:39 AM
At the Joust yesterday, Warren Walker had a sudden flame out of the engine on his Strega at a very bad place.  In an attempt to regain line tension, he ran backwards, tripped and fell on his left arm, causing a couple of small breaks in one arm bone.  They are vertical breaks, so the bone did not separate. Major pain, but no permanenet injury.

The plane hit the end of the lines and went into an inverted flat spin.  It hit the ground a lot less hard than it would have otherwise.  The fuselage is cracked and the vertical tail is broken off, but it is repairable.

I expect both to be back in the air real soon.

Hummmm? Too bad you didn't FILM that FOR U TUBE or AMERICA'S FUNNIEST VIDEOOOHOOO HO'S.

(Personally...I wonder why soooomany folks think accidents are so funny? ??? LL~
Any hoo...I wish Crash n burn W.W. my condolences and a bests wishes for speedy recovery for both his arm and his busted toy airplane.
After he heals....he should practice the old "tuck and roll method" when falling and especially for old men like Leo Mehl and I...HAVE BEEN TOLD TO NEVER STICK OUT AN ARM WHEN YA FALL.
(Both Leo and I in our youth had LOTS OF PRACTICE FALLING..from our bike and skiing daze.)

Strange is funny (sometimes)!
At the local quarter midget race (sat.5-30) two cars piled intothe end of the straightaway wall at highsped and a third one piled into them.
The resulting impact moved the softwall back into the flag stand with such an impact that the flag stand broke away ,and fell over
wall and out onto the track while the flagman was in the flagstand booth waving the yellow flag. Still waving the flag; he rode the stand down onto the track and the other cars slowed and missed him. Fortunatly he was young( twenties) and wasn,t hurt.
Just 5-6 hundred dollars worth of car repairs needed . They gave the flagman a rollover Trophy at the awards presintation!   n~ S?P

Wish I had my USA-1's demise on film. That would have been something.

Sorry to hear about Warren, though.

What happened Randy, I've been curious for awhile?

Matt,

I learned that there's a reason Bill Werwage said to cover it with SGM silkspan and add a second layer out to the gear. If you cover with "00" silkspan like I did, you run the risk of it letting go at the most inopportune moment ... like the first hard corner of an outside square ... right near the ground. I didn't know a plane could explode like that. It certainly entertained Danny Dirt a lot.

Charlie

It's off topic but there was a similar incident at Parramatta Raceway in Sydney several years ago. I think it was NSW Speedcar (quarter midget) Championship.

There were two kiwis dicing for second and third. Third place man gets over exuberant and creams second place man going into a corner, taking them both out. Parramatta Raceway used to be a trotting track so there is a big run off at the corners so long as you do not fall over going over the banking. Neither is hurt.

However, they were two kiwis competing in Oz. They were also in the same team. Same owner, same sponsors, same result—neither finished!  HB~>

They did get a few minutes of fame however, because the incident was featured on national TV during the following week as dumbest sports play of the week. mw~

I was there and saw Warren's flight , it was tough to watch .  Warren had put a lot of effort into his checker boarded stunter , so he put
a lot of effort into saving it . Please give Warren our regards .

I talked to Warren last night.  His arm  was broken and still in a splint.  He is going to have a cast put on today.

I have never broken anything taking a fall on by bike but I did break my arm high jumping when I was a kid. I was never very frgil but I was tought how to fall from my gym techer when I was tought gymnastics an I alwasy managed to fall basicly without using my extremities for a landing gear. I don't know about Shultzie but I would imagine he probably leaned to duck from playing in a band at some of those rouddy night clubs he played in to earn extra bucks and pick up chicks. Well,

Accidents are no stranger to myself.  Just ask me what happened while trying to get into my car on Sat May 2
in downtown Arab AL, during the POKE SALAT festival!  All I can say is ouch that hurt!
