WARNING!! Impending Glue Shortage
« on: April 13, 2015, 08:53:29 AM »
As the title of this post implies. I would like to warn everybody of a potential glue shortage. I have told those that know me well, that after being stuck on second shift for almost twenty years, if i ever got a day job, I was going to start building again with a passion and there might be a glue shortage once it all started to flow! I have managed to only build one new airplane in the last twenty years, along with some ARFs and bought a few models to help keep me flying. I'm going to change all of that!
Well, today is the day when I turn in my two weeks notice at my current employer and start at the new job on Monday the 27th. It will take me a bit to get back into a normal routine but once I do, and I get my stuff back into good order, several new models will be coming in my future. Gonna finish some that have been waiting for this day! If you have never worked second shift, it breaks up your personal time into before and after work. Then they moved the company I work for twenty miles further from my house, and there are two hours out of each day where I am just driving and getting nothing done. Add in some over time which spills over into the next day, and spare time gets even more short. For the last five years or so, I helped take care of my Mom and her property until she passed away, and that took a chunk out of my spare time also, but Mom was definitely worth the effort. I'm a little giddy with anticipation and nervous at the same time, but there are a lot of little signs that tell me this job opportunity is the right one for me, so I'm going full speed into it. I will be losing my company cell phone in the change, so those of you who have my cell phone number, it will not be active after the 23rd of April. One of the little things to get done is shop around for a new one, if the new employer doesn't provide one for me.
I will be giving up a lot of vacation time and starting over, so we'll see how the change affects contest attendance, but I haven't been out much lately anyway. If I went to a two day contest or a Saturday only contest before, I had to take a vacation day to take a night of work to travel. Getting up at 0-dark thirty and working a long Friday at the hobby shop and then working until midnight or later wasn't much fun. On the other hand, I may be able to attend some contests I couldn't before because I'll have Friday night toplan, pack and travel. We'll just see.
Just wanted to share my big news! Been a long hard search with a lot of stress along the way. but looking for some good times to come! I'll get some building done, be able to attend club meetings, and watch main stream TV instead of trying to catch reruns or video tape! Lots of stunt videos posted here that I never have time to watch, will catch up on those also over time. Gotta get through the next two weeks first!

    Thanks a lot everybody!

I "get" your reference to a glue shortage.  (You are beginning some serious building).  But, there really is a glue shortage.  Ambroid is becoming past history.  Sigment is also hard to find.  I think CA use has hurt sales of these traditional products.

Lately, I have been forced to buy Duco cement from the hardware store!  It works OK, but I really prefer Ambroid.

Let's hope traditional glue doesn't disappear completely.

Good luck with new job. I never like evening shift what time I was on it with the phone company.  Worked midnight shift for years.   Missed a lot of contests.  If things were like it was when I retired I would be  in seventh heaven.   Any way hope you like your new position.

A year or so ago I stocked up with 8 large tubes of Ambroid.
Youse guys need to look around a bit to find it....it is out there.
I just did a quick search and HobbyTown has the large and small tubes in several locations.
Go to the HT website and do a National Inventory Search and pick your store.
Then....contact your local HT and have them ship the glue to you or the local store.

Congrats Dan and good luck with the new gig. I made similar change just last August, I've got weekends off now for pretty much the first time in my working life and actually feel like I have a life again. Looking forward to seeing what comes out of the workshop down there, you're definitely overdue for some fresh new stuff to fly! ;D

Good for you Dan!  I have been working those hours for several years and lately been working nights as well, so I have 3 planes in different stages of completion.  Don't remember the last time I flew, but the end is in sight.  I hope to retire in a couple of years and am stocking up on balsa, kits, engines, and lots of GLUE.
Blessings,
Steve

Hi Punkin' Head!

VERY happy for you!  I hope it works out to be even better than you hoped.

ONE OF THESE DAYS... we've got to figure out a way to get together and do some flying.
Searching to find my new place in this hobby!

I talked to my distributor. Ambroid is still kind of alive according to them They may get a batch once a year or so and sell out fairly quickly. CA isn't helping the market but the RTF decimated it. RTF has its good and bad points but thats just the way it is.
