"Hobo" Announcement
« on: January 26, 2012, 09:01:56 AM »
I can finally announce that the “Hobo” will be in Model Aviation later this year. Probably August or September 2012.

The “Hobo”  Is a fast building Sport and Competition airplane with adjustable features that will enable it to do just about anything you can dream up. Based on the “Top Hat” airfoil, the airplane is presented with two different fuselage layouts, and “kit bashing” is actually encouraged. Engines from .25 to .46 and electrics can also be used.

There are several “Hobo” prototypes flying and all the design goals have been met.
Construction is intentionally simple with no blocks to carve and an upright engine.

The “Hobo” is an ideal step up from profiles.

A kit is in the near future.

Many thanks to Dave Russum, Bill Hummel and Gerald Schamp for their inputs. .

It looks really good Tom and looks like it will be a great transition plane.  This should be a successful design for you and I am sure it will be well received in our hobby.

Kindest regards

Mike

The fuselage reminds me of the Super Combat Streak, which was one of my favorites.

Mike,
Thanks for the positive comment. The "Hobo" has many options, including internal or external pushrods. They have been built both ways. I personally like the external set up since you can easily play with flap to elevator ratios, and fine adjustment of the pushrod lengths. Bill Hummel uses 1 to 1 flap to elevator. I use a little less flap movement. The "Hobo" is good for Sport, Intermediate or Advanced stunt. There has been nothing new for these purposes available in over 20 years, and certainly never an airplane with all these options.

Phil,
The simple old fashion box fuselage was done for simplicity and fast building. The secondary goal was to have an appealing looking airplane. The major difference from the older designs is that everything about the aerodynamics is new.

Guys, don't let the "old time" looks fool you, this is a potent stunter!  Tom has done his homework on current
stunt design, and nicely incorporated modern assets in the Hobo.  If you're talking "bang for the buck", this one
is hard to beat!  Use an old Fox 35, or Brodak 40 or Double Star 40 plain bearing, and fly the daylights out of
this design.

Hi Tom,

It looks perfect for the job.  I am sure that with your knowledge and experience this model will be a hit!  A great looking step up from a profile and should work great for pilots up through the Advanced class.

This is exactly the sort of stuff we need to help bring people in. We just had a rip roaring thread about electrics here, and something like this, with an AXI and a set batteries may be just the ticket for the neophytes. The RC boys have tons of stuff like this for folks who want to get in on the game. We need the equivalent of our "park flyers" to entice newbies.
