Walter Umland Stiletto 660

I'm thinking of building a Walter Umland kit of the Stiletto 660. Let me hear your recommendations for engines, pipes, bellcrank/leadout/pushrod suggestions and fuel tank suggestions. I've been watching this kit for awhile and think I'll just pay the asking price. Let me say I'd like to spare no expense within reason for the best equipment that is "readily" available.

Call Tom Morris and he can build you the perfect control system including bellcrank and carbon fiber pushrods.  I have three planes now with his stuff and it works great!!!

Hi Tim,

I agree with Andrew.  You can't beat Tom's control systems. 

I am planning on using either a Tom Lay or Randy Smith ST G.51 in mine.  I would suggest getting a ST G.51 reworked by either man and following their recommendations on how to run them.

I used Tom Morris controls in mine and a Randy Smith ST 51. All the parts fit together just fine. Now Im just waiting fir time to fly it.

Well, the Stilletto was designed around an ST46 and that's what Les Mcdonald used in his World Champs models so that's obviousy a good choice.
The only caveat to that is it takes a really good strong one to fly the airplane with authority.
I built and flew one in the middle 1980's and started with a ST46...I didn't have a really strong one at the time and couldn't talk Walt Menges out of his (which really put most ST60s shame)  So I shoehorned an ST60 in it nd Viola...instant wonderful airplane.
The one I'm planning to build soon is slated for a ROJett 61 RE wth a muffler.
You mentioned a pipe in your post but the Stelletto wasn't designed for a pipe and would probably take significant modification of the fuselage to house one.

With good power I believe the Stilletto probably flys as good as any stunt design in existence.

How would an evolution 60 do?

  I'm currently working on a 660 from plans and
I'm planning on trying a Aviastar .61 which seems
good so far.
  If I don't like it, I have several ST V60's to fall
back on. I'm using a "clamp" type motor mount
so the bolt pattern isn't critical.
   Could anyone tell me what a ST 46 weighs?
(with or without muffler.)

 How about a PA .40 UL  Merlin  ? Anyone think this would be a good combination?  RE Muffler  , No pipe ?

I was told that Les used some highly modified K&B 4011's in the early Stillettos' but the articles He wrote in Stunt News indicated that He was Building ST46's and that's what was in His world Champs models.  He talked about learning how to build a strong ST46 from Bill Werwage, among others...maybe he will chime in and tell all the truth.  My 73 year old memory "Ain't worth a crap anymore".

Actually, that is where I read that Les used the K&B 40 in the early Stiletto days.  He mentioned the engine builder who, in conjunction with K&B, kept him supplied.  I think as the airplane grew in size, he did switch to the 46.
