Mini Tsunami for Brodak 1/2 stunt Comp.
« on: February 28, 2019, 06:43:45 AM »
Posted this in the 1/2A forum but thought I would post here as well to generate more interest in others building 1/2A's

This contest should be a real hoot.

A slightly reduced version of my big Tsunami.

33", 8.5 oz, TD 051  ...we will see

Looks great Tim. Mine certainly won't be that nice but I'm hoping it flies well. I'm taking a slightly different approach to a model for this event. Trying something wacky. If I show up with a hastily built Baby Nobler you'll know my experiment was a bust. LOL.

Mike, thanks for the nice words, looking forward to seeing you at Brodak

Scott it was a rough Thursday and I might or might not have had a cocktail or two  n~

I will have to get back to you tomorrow.

I reduced my big Tsunami exactly 57%

The CG now that I have a tank mounted looks really good, but I will give you the moments later.

As I said on the 1/2A  thread....not even sure it will fly well or at all....if we could just get some descent weather to give it a try.

I will post all the results as soon as I have some....right now all I can say is its cute  ;) ;)

It looks very good!  Where are you doing your painting?  I am having to wait until warmer weather.  As you know, I don't have a detached shop, so if I paint, the whole house gets the "aroma".  Worse, when I turn on my fireplace it burns the VOCs in the air and makes it even worse.

I'm trying to figure out how to also build a half-A without impacting my building schedule on the Uber-Hai, the Casales, and the SL-2 rebuild.

I also want to build a Jimmy Allen for FAC.

Too many builds, too little time, too slow a builder....

My shop is built off the back f my garage, it has its own heating and air system so I am fortunate. I usually spray dope right in the shop, one open window, and the other with a box fan sucking out the fumes. What little over spray there is, once it hits the air it is pretty much dry anyway so the  dust can be wiped up. Auto clear is a totally different story. It stays wet and is very toxic fumy. I usually spray that outside on a very calm day.

The little Tsunami was about a week wonder, and hour to draw it up, 2 evenings to build, and 2 days to cover and 3 days to paint.... it is not my best effort at all but since I am not even sure it will fly that well I didn't want to spend a lot of time on it.

The Wen-Mac or the Big MiG?  LL~

Tim, your plane is just a great size, and once you get the engine and tank sorted out will easily do a pattern better than you probably can. Initially, I would set the flap throw about 3/4 that of the elevator and the handle spacing just barely more than the size of your bellcrank. Maximum throw of the elevator at full handle deflection about 20deg, flaps 15deg.

You can always tune it hotter if it is sluggish, but not if it goes ape...t and crashes.

Look into the 1/2 A exponential handle from RSM. It has had great reviews.  H^^

Keep us posted!
Think S.M.A.L.L. y'all and, it's all good, CL, FF and RC!

Larry,

Currently this is a elevator only design...I could easily install flaps but was going to see how it performed with out them first. I am hopeful but this is my first try at a full size 1/2A stunter. My only other experience was with baby ringmasters and lil jump-in beans way to long ago to remember.

I am really looking forward to the adventure.

This is why I do this hobby, I never get bored  #^ #^ #^

Hello Tim, What is the wing area of your model?  Just eyeballing the photos, it looks to be around 220Sq"s;
that's good for the total weight. I think that it may be a bit nose heavy with a metal fuel tank when filled
up with enough fuel to fly a stunt pattern.  So... if that's the case, please consider using a balloon tank
which will give a much better fuel delivery, and weigh less than the metal tank.

Larry; this model does not have flaps, so I personally recommend, setting the elevator deflections to
no more than 25 degrees; which is over what's needed, but full handle deflection will not be necessary
to perform maneuvers.

Tim, your model should fly very well; just a few adjustments(CG placement, prop diameter and pitch,
fuel used) will hone the performance, and oh yes, handle line spacing per Larry R's handle advice.
Best of luck;  Tony G   H^^

Take a look at my SkySport design. (An RSM kit). It is flapless, actually weighs more and is somewhat smaller than your Tsunami.

Bart Klapinski scored a 495 with it on his first flight. Me, 480s is my level. Sigh.... At one contetst I came in third behind Bart and Keith Trostle... both flying MY PLANE!

Trust me, a modern 1/2 A - 1cc plane in smooth, moderate air can tun as good a pattern as a big ship. The Pinto and Baby Pathfinder are right there! The Stork is also a winner (Brodak kit)

I have a Brodak Baby Clown with flaps added to make it a Baby Super Clown that turns on a dime. Original Cox Medallion, Tornado 5x4:Nylon prop, 38’x.008” lines, Expo handle.

Have faith, we have come a LONG way from Cubs and Jumpin’ Beans on short Dacron lines.

Span is 14" root chord is 4" tip is 3".....it has a big tail, I have never had too much tail before #^ #^ #^

I will let you do the math, but I can tell you the moments are 57% of what my big one was....so take your favorite stunter and reduce it down to see what you get

oh yeah.  We be bad, we be bad.   #^

So, if the stab thickness is only like 1/16th (typical for a 1/2 A tail) how do you give it a sharp leading edge?  Or is 1/16th considered a sharp leading edge?  I'm thinking of using plywood for the stab.  We started doing that with the Musciano planes since a 1/16th balsa tail can be so fragile.

By the way, I recall that Windy's last stunt ship had a very thin stab, like 1/8th thick?

Tim;

Ran the 2 .061's this morning at the house.

used a 5x3 and 6x4 apc on each one.
used 25%fuel

Both motors ran very nice.

Let me know how the test flight goes with the TeeDee.

What % nitro do you have to run with that motor?
