I happened to go over on the SSW site just to see what was happening. Now I wish I hadn't. Seems the Cholla Choppers have now instituted their version of the BOM. It seems that if you have a Classic plane for competition that is an ARC/ARF or uses any part of such they will not get appearance points. You can still fly in the competition for flying points. By the way same goes for borrowed planes also. I am in agreement with them, but, how are they going to tell when someone has used the wing and tail surfaces from and ARC/ARF plane? I was honest about mine and don't beleive the few appearance points would have help me that much. Anyway my P-39 should be ready by next year. At least they didn't say anything about laser cut parts. it seems simple enough Doc.
you have to answer the question, did you build at least 50% yes or no.
if people want to lie about it then thats between them and their conscience (if they have one)
I can't imagine someone who built their model being offended by the question.
for my own satisfaction i allmost feel guilty when i build from a laser cut kit. its almost ready to fly for me.
but thats just me.
if someone feels they built 50% of their model then the answer is yes. if they aren't sure if they did then the answer is probably no if they are honest with themselves.
just my opinion

Dave, as far as how the parts were cut out, I wouldn't get ONE grey hair over it. Back years ago, the parts were printed on a sheet of balsa (sometimes I think it must of been white pine ) and the builder had to cut them out of the sheet. When some kit makers started Die-crushing the parts, there was a HUGE hue and cry that it violated the bOM rule. just about a big of controversy as it is today but without the media of the computer to boost the arguments.
Don't worry about lazer cutting

Not to start anything, but 50% isn't anywhere in the AMA rule book, and I didn't see that mentioned when I read the CC rules for VSC........ did I miss it?? I don'tr even remember exactly what the spur of the moment ruling at the NATS a year ago or so said...............
-
Bill,
Here is the link to the rules for VSC. They specify the 50% rule.
The AMA says you can change the rules for your contest if you put out advanced notice, so here it is.
The AMA changed the rules AT the Nats, so I don't see where this is a problem.
If you use an ARC wing from Bobby, I think it's OK to use an ARC wing from an ARC. It wouldn't bother me. We've been using sheeted foam wings since '66, George A. was ED and said it was within the BOM rules.

actually i was kinda kidding about the laser cutting. but since i have been known to scratch build old tyme and classic planes in a week or two before Tucson, kits do seen allmost like cheating.
but hey to each his or her own.
i do find it intersting some times that guys complain they cant build as nice as some of the other good builders, so that is why the buy and fly. and in some cases they might be right!
well the first airplane most of us built wasn't very good either, but hey after a few builds your skills just might improve and eventually you just might enjoy building for yourself. or maybe not but you probably wont cause your building to get worse anyway.
you will never improve your building skills if you never build. thats an absolute guarantee.
in fact if i were a betting man i would put money on it

Chris;
Did you forget something? Maybe my eyes are shot? But I am quite sure I don't see the "LINK" you are referring to. I would like to read it.
"Billy G" ;D

Sounds a good rule to me. I am going to be judging expert in a couple of weeks and maybe the CD should see this post.
As for laser cutting, I work my behind off on Autocad and Solidworks designing ships and if someone else has got the $80,000 laser machine, then we are going to get real intimate!!!

The only thing that somehow a Tom Morris "Quick Build Kit" somehow got a pass?
A Tom Morris Quick Build Kit an ARC, period.
Other than that, I think the AMA BOM rule never allowed pre built components. So, they are enforcing the letter of the rule.

HI Chris,
Thanks, I just missed it when I read the rules, I guess! **)
It's not a problem to me since the rule book says a contest can publish their rules beforehand and all is good. The CC have published the rules and that's all it takes. ;D

And no one ever said you HAD to go to a contest.

Does anyone know the dates for VSC XX?
