Title: VSC Results?
Post by: Tom Niebuhr on March 21, 2013, 10:40:05 AM
Rex has been kind enough to show some pictures in the Leaving for VSC post.

But we have had no details. Who participated in OTS? What airplane/ engines? What were the results.

We are now well into Classic. Who is in Classic? etc. etc.

We are starved for info.

Does the Cholla Choppers have a VSC facebook page or website with daily updates and pics? I'll check it out and see as many members of our club are participating and I too would like to see how this prestigious CL event is going.

Unfortunately, my batteries died out before I could copy the scoreboard.

Maybe someone has it on their cell phone.

I believe Lou Wolgast won OTS.

Looks like that answers the attendance question, waaaay down from previous years.

Yes, unfortunately, it is about half of it once was. May be the Economy?  Gas prices?  Or the fact that we're all aging, and some have departed this world.  Regardless, those who are here are having a very nice time.

I wish I could make it and hope to at least once.

Thanks Allen.

I just talked to Don Hutchinson. He said he wasn't ready with his new airplanes. He also had some other commitments.

The weather here in TX has been terrible for flying. Since January we have had only a few days with winds below 15mph. Most days have been 25 mph with gusts of 40mph and higher.

Yes, thanks Allen for posting the Old Time results.   Looking at Rex's pics it did look like attendance was down.   I hope to be there next year even if I have to go by myself like I did the second year I attended.  This snow and ice is getting to  me.

Hi Allen,

Thanks for the scoreboard shots, my friend!  I would guess that there are many factors for the decreased attendance.  The economy isn't the greatest it has been in the past for sure.  Still, I am sure all who did make it are having a ball!

VSC is definitely on my bucket list. Lots and lots of planes I would like to build for it. Plenty of good motors too!!

I suspect that for many, it's a case of low cash. I would have been there this year but of a certain lack of capital.

Greg Elling had a massive crash. Went into the wing-over and straight into the ground on the other side. Controls failed. The model hit STRAIGHT IN! It did not even break the prop or damage the engine beyond needing Randy to re-check to make sure the crank is still seated properly in the bearings.

Post crash analysis led to a couple of failure scenarios that Greg will have to evaluate. My own was that the top bell crank mounting plate broke loose from the spar when the wing-over was started and jammed the controls. It will be interesting to see if any other sense can be made from the damage.

Bob McD and Paul W. are going to make it interesting! Of course, I don't recall if the two best rounds count, or total of 3.  n~

Two best flights of  three.  Gives you a throw out flight.

Windy tomorrow, so that may change things.

Yup, the "old" Skylark put it to them today! Put up a 603 real early and then let them try to find a way to beat it. They tried but were unsuccessful.

Classic stunt won by a period correct setup!!!:
Kit built Skylark
McCoy 40 open exhaust
Y&O 10*6
Froom spinner
Perfect wheels
EZ Just handle

It doesn't get more correct than this, and it took on all the other classic planes with modern equipment in them!

That's what I'm talking about! Nice work Paul. Showing them that "Ole Ed Southwick's" design can still get the job done.

Congratulations Paul; That is so neat that you used period equipment. Congrats to Joe Gilbert for 4th place in Classic, 8th in Old Time, and 3rd in ignition. Pretty impressive Joe.

You are soooo right Randy.
I have watch Mr. Walker fly many times, and I'm convinced that if Paul put enough motor on a brick, he would still be very competitive with it.
I love the fact that he flew with period correct equipment. To me, that is what this event was meant to be. Good job Paul, congratulations.

Seems funny now but, on Monday during my brief stop at the field I asked Paul if it was electrified as a joke and he said, "We'll see!" :D We all know he could win swinging a rock tied to a string, but I think it is a notable statement that he made in flying a period correct set-up. H^^

Congrats on the hard earned win Paul.   I can still remember watching you practice at a long ago NATS while standing next to Mike Pratt.   After you landed, I looked at Mike and asked if that was you.   He replied yes that is Paul Walker just checking the engine run.   He also stated to watch the difference when the judges are holding the score pad in front of them.

If memory serves (which it often doesn't), P.W. won Classic at an earlier VSC with a black Cobra - in much the same convincing fashion as he won it this year.

No Mike that's not correct.  The previous VSC that Paul attended was won by Bill Werwage.
Paul had some small previous damage on the Cobra and recieved a very low appearance score that was simply too great to overcome to Billy's 19 points.
Judging is judging I guess...any way if you think back you'll remember because you and I discussed the situation at length.  Of course neither you or I were involved...

I was unable to take pictures of the scoreboard but my memory is that Paul won, Bob Whitely was second, and Bob Mcdonald was third by 1/2 a point behind RJW, 1161.5 to 1162.
Doesn't get closer than that.  My failing memory doesn't go further than that.

Hi Randy,

I am not sure which VSC you reference above, but Paul Walker did win the Classic event in 1999 with a Fox 35 powered Cobra.  Bob Hunt was 2nd followed by Werwage, Fancher and Whitely.

Yeah, I remember Paul winning before, but can't remember the year.   Search in the records shoujld show who won and all the other placings if a person searches hard enough.

Randy, you're not thinking back far enough.  Paul won with the Cobra in 1999 (VSC-XI).

OK Keith,
I probably missed that one due to an Opera performance.
The one I'm referring to had a fly-off with Billy and Gerry Phelps, in what seemed like a 25 MPH wind...amazing flying, but Paul had left early not too happy I might add about his appearance score.
In fact I discussed the Cobra with him at this years VSC and He said it still lived but it wasn't coming to VSC again.
Obviously the Skylark filled in just fine.

In fact the one I'm discussing was probably 1997 or 98 because it's the first one I attended with the Scarinzi Blue Angel...that's another story, but let's just say that Paul and I had something in common during the appearance judging and it wasn't flying skill LL~.
