VSC Prep......one week prior....back in time.....
« on: March 27, 2011, 08:13:30 PM »
After a "straight in clearance" followed to the letter, I placed the remains of my trusty "Skylark" aside for a year.  A week before the VSC, I needed to get a plane ready, fast. With my Hamby "Bluegrass" fuse jig at the ready, I locked all the pieces I had in the correct position, cut new parts to fit, glued'em in, slapped on the silkspan with help from Linda Bob, patched all the open bay holes, shot some primer, color and clear, and viola! I was ready.

Well, almost, first flights at VSC had engine problems, but cleaning debris out of the fuel filter fixed that.

Garnered nine big ones in Appearance Judging. :)

Nice work Indeed - great rebuild.

Looking at the plan behind - I can tell you that your fin isnt the right shape.

And the wings look different.. and canopy is WAY off.. and possible the stab.  ~>

I bashed it a bit here and there, mate! This is the third, and probably the last, rebuild.
I'll be giving a billy wagon a go next time, fair dinkum! With a huge motor in the boot.
Cheers,
dg :)

Dale, I am glad that you guys made it out to VSC and I hope without any problems. We elected to sit this one out this year. I have gone flying a few times since my last surgery back in Feb. but I still get worn out after a few flights. I am working on a 11% down sized Legacy. It will have a .40 in it. Lynda got me a Brodak kit for Christmas and upon inspecting the plans I discovered that the airfoil was exactly the same as a S/Chipmunk only 5 inches shorter in W/S. I had an extra foam Chipmunk wing from Model Wings out of Marietta, Ga. So I down sized the whole plane and got out some raw stock and have gone to work. The nose sub assembly is ready for some initial paint. Next the wing will get covered and the real fuselage will get finished and it will all be married together. I promised myself that I will get on the full size version later this spring after this plane is finished. I purchased a new Avastar .46 C/L engine for the kit plane. I have run this engine for nearly an hour. It starts quick and seems to have plenty of power. If anyone is interested Roy's Hobby Shop in Hurst, Texas has two more of these engines available at a price substantially lower than you can order from Brodak. I like that part.

The Luetys were missed, as were some others, Dave Russum and his camera didn't make it. Looking to next year already, though,

They did not seem to be giving any appearance points away this year did they Dale. I got 8 on my Magician. A few years ago I got 18 on a Magician. Seems to be a huge spread. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder for sure. I saw very few that got over 10 points. They did have a lot of planes to look at, and some were real beauties. I do think they were pretty fair, just downgraded a little more than usual.

I really got about what I should have, no real complaints, what with my rush just to get something in the air. But yours wasn't the only really nice airplane that got hammered.....I learned of some that I figured would be at least 15 or so, such as yours, didn't break into double figures.

But, make no mistake, I think the VSC is the premier event in Stunt and we'll be there as long as we can and as long as those great folks keep putting it on!

Amen to that Dale. I wish you could have gotten your ignition plane working. We had a lot of fun over on that circle. I learned a few things as usual from the other guys. I saw some of the best stunt runs ever. Everyones engines were working so well that we got done very early. I don't think I saw one bad run except for mine on the first day. It is just a hoot flying with a bunch of guys all running ignition. I decided not to fly Old Time this year. Just to much for an old man trying to fly both events on the same day. Kind of wanted to hang around the ignition circle anyway.
