VSC Checklist for Northwest Flyers for next year...
« on: March 18, 2012, 09:50:23 AM »
Be aware that there is a giant burning orb in the sky that will blind you at the most inconvenient times:

     o  Double strength sunglasses
     o  Welders goggles
o  Invest in my new secret product that I havn't invented yet that emulates macular
degeneation electronically to put the sun in the "black holes".  Should we go
public next month even if it doesn't work (why not, Bil Gates did with Windows I) ?

The humidity is so low that my plane weighed 43 oz when I arrived and 40 Oz four days later
after the moisture from the rainstorns (and being in my "green box" on top of the car) dried out.

o Ship the model down a week ahead and have a Tucson friend hang it in the sun with the
quilted wing covers on it to prevent warp.
     o  Bring lots of chapstick.
o  Check enginge mounting screw tightening after a couple of flights.

Most folks around Seattle have gill slits in their raincoats.

o Sew these shut and make airtifght with hinge sealing tape.
o  Bring an ointment with lanolin or aloe.

The Altitude in Tucon is 2500 ft

o Bring oversized venturi inserts and a file to file flats on the sides of the spraybar to
let it breathe whatever air it can get (Electrics ignore this).
    o  Bring a thermometer if you have a 4s - 30% run-time improvement as it
         gets warmer.
o Thow in a few of those wide-body re-up's that your enginge can't
       normally pull through the pattern.
o If you think you're going to use nitro to solve the problem, figure out a way to mount
a larger fule tank (Mark Scarborough is experienced in this area).
o If you use 25% nitro be sure that your model can be submerged in bleach or other strong oxidizers
without destroying the finish : burgandy turns pink, insignia blue becomes baby blue.
   o Build it light
   o Build it light
   o Build it light
   o Build it light
   o Build it light
   o Build it light

Rex I love the comments . Here in NC is a good compromise between Tucson and the cold wet north.

The best solution would be to move the VSC to the NW and watch them suffer!

I live in So. Cal. and everytime I go to Tucson my head feels like it was put in a vice and squeezed hard.  Don't know what they put in the air but my sinus do not like it.  As soon as I am a few miles from the coast everything is better and I can breath again.   As far as the sun goes thems of us who live down south already know about sun glasses and sun block, they are a requirement.  Other than that I love VSC, I am working on next years Classic model right now.  I plan to fly ignition again next year, VSC is a great gathering of control line modelers and it's a party from start to finish.

I spent the whole week with my sinuses blowing up. I forgot to refill my allergy meds before I left and man did I suffer. My head was plugged the whole week. Probably led to some of my less than sterling decisions. So I will add to my check list.

Allergy meds.
Additional allergy meds.
Surgery masks to wear at the field.

You guys left out the one most important thing:  LIQUID.   Lots of water and I mean water during the day while flying.  Leave the other drinks for in the evening or if you are not flying.   H^^

Come fly with me in Klamath Falls on your way to Tuscon.  If it will fly at 4100 feet, 2500 will be a piece of cake. I'm not the highest flier around, but at least I am somewhat on the route to Arizona.

I had a light plane with plenty of power. I needed more trim time.

Russ,

I'm currently in Albuquerque 9Ceader Crest ) visiting my grandson.  I bought him an
"Orville Wright Commemorative"  PUDDLE JUMPER at the Pima Air Museum in Tucson.
It flew well thare. When I tried to demo it, I couldnt make it stay aloft for more than 3 seconds.

The PUDDLE JUMPER is a prop with a stick pointing out of the hub at the ground.  You
rub the round stick between 2 palms and it rotates the prop to make it fly. No Virginia, I didn't
make it spin backwards.

Just not enough air in New Mexico.  It will work great at sea level.

I made one of these out of a Zinger prop and a dowel. Too heavy and I about killed myself with it, but it was fun.

The quilts on my Ed Southwick Skylark are dual purpose. They protect the wing and tail from getting holes punched in them, and they shield the passerby from the eyesore that lies within! Hangar rash does not present well. It is a pretty good flying plane, especially with the quilted covers removed!    :)   dg
